Help for Beginners - Courses

Each event will have different type of courses from the range below:

Very Easy - all controls on paths, no route choice Ages 6-10 1km-1.5km
Yellow
Easy - all controls on paths, simple decisions Ages 8-12 1.5km-2.5km
Orange
Simple navigation - controls on or near paths on large features Ages 10-14, Adult novices 2km-3km
Long Orange
as Orange, but longer Fit adult novices 4km-6km
Light Green
Navigation needs map reading and compass. Controls on more subtle features Intermediate from age 12 upwards 3km-4km
Very Short Green
Full Technical Orienteering Age 13 upwards 2.5km-3km

Sprint - very short technical races in city centres or parks. Courses will normally be age class based.
 
Urban - usually take place in urban terrain, predominantly towns or city centres, using public open spaces, pedestrian and trafficked streets as well as parks. Courses will normally be age class based.
 
Non-Standard Courses - Only for Summer/Winter Leagues and other low-key events, fully explained at the event.

For White, Yellow and Orange, course length is dependant on the path layout needed to meet the technical requirements.
For other courses, length will be at long end of range when the area is flatter, and vice-versa.


All 'Men' courses are really 'Open' as women may run them if they wish.
Adults over the age of 35 may "run up" a younger course courses (up to 21) and remain competitive. Similarily Juniors under 21 may "run up" an older course up to 21 - but this is only for experienced juniors having taken advice from their coaches.
