It's adjacent to Mansfield Woodhouse station and can also be accessed off Chesterfield Road, Mansfield.
It's one of the restored colliery sites and with a bit of imagination and some decent legs could be combined with Shirebrook Woods.
( Assuming we mapped the inbetween bit and found a safeway across the Railway

'Making it' are supporting our community orienteering in Mansfield. If you're not going to the British Champs this weekend and are looking for something to do, then this place is open during school holidays and looks interesting http://makingitdiscoverycentre.co.uk/

Several people came up to me at the Thoresby event with their guesses but they were all incorrect
As no-one has bothered online the answer is ....tada..... Oxclose Wood
Excellent small area with the steepest hill climbs we have in NOC ( for those that can cope with that sort of thing) and as I said the plantations are thinning out well, giving more viable route choice options.
I was going to try and make this a regular thing but obviously there's not really much point if no-one responds...perhaps we really should offer a prize?

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my walk around Thoresby. It was good to revisit it after so many years and to find it had changed so much for the better!
It was much more open and runnable ( yeah if only:( !) than it used to be and it's still the only place I have orienteered with Californian Redwood trees.

Thanks to all behind the scenes for reactivating this area...It was well worth the 20 yr wait! (which is more than can be said for the last EMOA area that made that boast)

Incidentally the novice planner to my novice controller back in the 90's was none other than Alan Beardsley who didn't recycle any of the original legs....honest! although he may need to in 20 more years:D

Good also to see John Bailey back in the fold after a break nearly as long.
Hope the rest of you quiet orienteers enjoyed it ?

Whilst the great and the good were enjoying themselves way up North at the JK, the local members...you remember the ones who don't travel far, were as usual left to their own devices.
Anyhow in my case this meant a spot of Cycling and some Geocaching.
I have submitted a picture of one of NOC's areas...see if you can identify it and by the way the woodland is a whole lot more runnable than when last used.
There may be a prize.... or not as the case may be!

And to think of all those committee meetings when you told me NO events at half-term because "we will all be away"

I still think its is worth opening a dialogue with Portland College just to get a definitive answer on this if this has not already been done?
Somewhere lurking in the recesses is an idea that at sometime in the past we were going to do a Wheelchair trail for the students? ( As you may have seen across the road in Fountaindale)
I don't recall what happened to that idea but possibly a reciprocal arrangement could be a way forward?

A Big Thank You to all those competitors who assisted or asked about my well-being after I fell and sadly broke my ankle in Thieves Wood today. Short Green was going so well and so I 'shuffled' a bit faster towards #11 and the spikes on my o-shoes caused my left food to slide along a snow covered branch and twist back. A special thank you to the young boy competitor who hearing my cries ran to the finish for assistance coming to let me know help was on its way and to Alison and Alison who forgave their Orange course to stay with me, keep me warm and raise my spirits. Also many thanks to Hilary and the NOC Team who swiftly responded to call for an Ambulance. We are only sorry that we didn't take a photo of the ambulance jeep/buggy that collected me from a small forest path! Hull Royal A&E awaits in the morning I hope for a swift recovery. Thanks again - you were brilliant. Amanda Ward HALO

Finally after all these years
Well done Hilary! I do like a bit of joined up thinking
If everyone is very good and we leave the place neat and tidy ( as we normally do) then this could possibly be the best parking for both Thieves and Harlow Wood.
I can recommend the cafe as well
Now all we need to do is join the 2 maps together
