At the Nottinghamshire County Council Sports Review of the Year, out of 20 nominees for the Junior Sportsperson - the winner was Helen Palmer of Orienteering. Two other young people (Hockey) got awards for 'school sports performances'. Thanks to NOC committee for nominating Helen - and to Jad for writing the citation - from a very proud Mum!! Good publicity for a minority sport as well - but we are on Notts list of 11 priority sports.

Hilary Palmer
NOC Juniors (representing EMOA) were joint winners (see results).
Compass Sport Cup We reached the Final !

In the semi-final, NOC beat HH by 80-51, and MDOC beat TVOC by 81-52. Rescoring for the final, we lost to our cross-Pennine foes by 54-79.

A fuller report later.

A very special thank you to Janet for arranging everything from Round One right through to the weekend in the Lake District.

Peter Palmer Relays September 20th-21st.
We departed Nottingham early Saturday afternoon, in high spirits, arriving in Norwich around 5pm. Many of us went and grabbed some food from a local fast food restaurant and quickly rushed back to watch the footie.

NOC seemed to be pretty poor on this front, the younger ones entered a team, but were unsuccessful in making it through the lst round. It was hardly living up to last year’s victory, but the comment passed was "the playing conditions (grass and mini floodlights) were not up to their professional standards!", so the competition was eventually won by the 'Grantown 97' Tour team. It was then time to turn in for the night and prepare for the morning ahead.

I awoke about 5.20am to be told that lst leg (Richard R,) had finished, coming back in 3rd place, 22 seconds down on Walton Chasers and ½minute on COBOC and that 2nd leg would be back soon. It was pretty obvious then that it was quick terrain, as they were doing just over 5min km's. in the dark, so we had to quickly wake up and get our act together.

Over the next few legs Walton Chasers gradually extended their lead to 7 minutes, we managed to pull it back to only 4 minutes, but maintaining 2nd position. Alistair F went out on the last leg, and by then 2nd place was pretty much secured, and the team finished 5mins 42secs behind the clear leaders from the beginning, Walton Chasers. The 2nd NOC team also put on a great effort showing good promise for teams in the future.

I think all of us that went had a good time, and on behalf of them I would like to thank Jim Clarke and Steve Hodkinson for making it possible for us to go, and NOC for their financial support.

Nicola Olivant Junior Rep.

N.B. If anyone from Walton Chasers is reading this then watch out next year, 5 mins is nothing.

Jim Clarke and Steve Hodkinson took two teams to the Peter Palmer Relays in Norwich.

The experienced team of Richard Robinson, Stephen Wright, Chris Hodkinson, Helen Palmer, Nicola Olivant, Robert Palmer, Colin Olivant and Alistair Footitt finished 2nd only 5 minutes behind Walton Chasers.

NOC also had a B team of Fiona Munton, Thomas Billam, Matthew Winser, Nicholas James, Matthew Haines-Young, Emily Talbot, Martin Cox and Matthew Sackman The novices at this event, who were there for the experience, as much as anything, also managed a very respectable time, so we will look to them in the future!

The Annual General Meeting of Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club will take place on 18 October 1997. It will be held at The National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont.

The start time this year will be a little later at 6.30pm.

A licensed bar will be available, hopefully without the jukebox.

We will aim to finish at a reasonable time, as many of you will be travelling to the National Event at Cinderford on Sunday morning.

Agenda and a copy of last year's minutes to follow.

Attached is a copy of the constitution.

Any nominations for committee positions, resolutions, amendments to the constitution or items requiring a vote, to be sent to the Secretary by 4th October 1997.

Jad Dziadosz, Secretary
Due to parking difficulties, this event has been downgraded to a C5. There will be no Brown or Blue courses open to the general orienteer.
The East Midlands' Schools Champs will provide the full range of courses needed.

It is essential that you share transport to this event.
These are the preliminary results, stress preliminary.

I do not have the official Gold Times, and cannot vouch for the gold times for the S or psuedo gold times for the B courses as I don't have the actual course distances either.

There appear to be some runners missing as well!

will be on 18th October, at the National Watersports Centre, Holmepierrepont, from 18:30 to 22:00.

Getting a venue and a date in October has been extremely difficult. Yes, we do know that there is a National next day in the Forest of Dean, so Ray has agreed to limit his speech to a few sentences only.

The room holds 80. Last year we had 50, so let's see if we can fill this venue. There is of course a bar, and we will arrange tea/coffee. There is no nearby Juke Box!

Nominations for committee posts and resolutions for the Agenda need to be with Jad by 4th October.

Cricket was won by the Juniors whose diet must have been carrots for many weeks.
A new stock of 'O' tops is ready. See Ray at Aberfeldy.
Alison and John Sage won this interesting event by the large margin of half a mile.

Thanks to Colin and family, we struggled with tortuous clues and tortuous lanes, strange coloured leaves and the purchase of carrot(s)!
The Entries address for this Badge Event has been been hard to find.

Because of a BOF Council ruling, we cannot publish it here on the Web, but send Ray an Link no longer available and he'll reply direct to you.
Another good weekend for NOC -- an excellent result at the Harvester and 4 NOC members went to the Shamrock O Ringen and brought home trophies:

Amazingly technical moorland terrain with ribs of rock all over the place - but mostly mapped as contours not rock! Managed to go slowly enough not to make too many horrendous mistakes!!

I know that some unknown R.Brown M21 scored 2 points on Brown 1.

Also the junior scoring on the printed results is 4-3-2-1. I thought it should be 5-4-3-2.

Don't worry, we still beat EPOC.

NB Remember every team had to have at least 20 'age points', so the permutations meant every leg would have perhaps one or two fast M21s. Also the terrain underfoot, the bursts of sunshine and the thunderstorm affected legs in different ways at different times.

It certainly seemed to affect everybody's performance, our only top three placings being Colin Olivant 3rd on M12A, Helen Palmer 1st on the voided W16A, and a family effort: Ros Bourne 2nd W55L with a clear win for Peter Bourne on M55S.

Yes, that was the final score in the second round of the Compass Sport Cup played at Hay Woods. Another brilliant NOC turn out and some great runs, especially by the younger members of the Club. Well done to everyone who ran.

We are now in the Regional Final. This will take place on SATURDAY 14th June at Canklow Woods near Rotherham. Start times 9:30 - 11:30. All the Compass Sport Cup courses plus a yellow.

This is being played as a three way tie:
WCH v EPOC and then the winners of that re-scored against NOC. (the form book would suggest that EPOC should beat WCH, so we will probably by playing EPOC).

Travel directions: M1 to Junction 33. Take the A630 to Rotherham. At the first roundabout turn right, onto the A631 (Bawtry Road). At the first traffic lights turn left into Moorgate. After 1.5km (just after the hospital), turn left into the Car park. This is at Oakwood Comprehensive School. The event will be O signed from the beginning of Moorgate.

SYO are putting this event on specially and have asked for 6 volunteers from each club to help on the day with results etc. Please phone me if you would be willing to do this.

This is a great chance to reach the final (to be held on 12th October somewhere in or near the Lakes). Last time we played EPOC we lost by 1 point so PLEASE turn out and run. Thanks.

Janet Evans
We beat DVO by 71-62 at Hay Wood.

Next round (the quarter finals) is SATURDAY 14th JUNE at Canklow Woods, Rotherham (near M1 J33).

Well done everybody.
I understand that enormous pits (40ft across) have appeared on Perran Sands in the last two weeks. Apparently there used to be mines there, and the exceptionally dry weather (remember comments at the event about strange water table), has caused collapses beneath the dunes.

Perhaps we were lucky to have the JK when we did! More details when I get the newspaper cutting. Ray

The first North Notts club run took place from Keith's yesterday 10.04.97.
On offer were several runs through terrain (well Strawberry Hill actually ) of up to 10K including fartlek, Interval training and speed work.
The après coffee and biscuits were excellent.
This would have been more enjoyable if Keith had actually had someone to run with!
The offer will stand until the summer league commences because he really can't stand running alone. Keith Streb
Back from the land of 5* terrain ( and those brown wiggly things ) Nottinghamshire welcomes back Kevin and Irene King and family.
Hope they have brought back a spare contour for the Strawberry Hill map! Keith Streb
No winners, sob. But not bad at all.

NOC had many winners. Rather than leaving some out by my faulty memory, let's wait for the printed results!
Another crop of good runs. Well done.

On this evidence the three larger clubs are closely matched at senior level, but yet again NOC juniors are dominant!
Compass Sport CupNOC will face DVO at Hay Wood, OD on 11th May.
Make sure this date goes in your diary NOW!
Congratulations to DVO who beat HOC by 30 points on Sunday at Cannock Chase.
We face DVO in the next round. Date and venue to be agreed between team captains.
Congratulations to Alistair Footitt and Helen Palmer who have been selected to represent UK at the International School Sports Federation Championships in Italy at the beginning of May.
An interesting evening of chat about club and wider issues.
Fifteen attended, including two less familiar faces. Welcome Brian and Arlene!
The new venue for the Thursday training run started well. A power cut. So the building was in darkness, but we managed to change in the gloom.
Our new friends, the hockey and the lacrosse players had all cried off because of the snow, and were suprised that we wanted to have a run!
Twenty (20) attended. With increased numbers like this, we can plan more sophisticated training.
