Could juniors please let me know who is going and also if they need to go on the Minibus.

It will be good to get as many juniors as possible to attend, Ben Beresford and myself will need to know who is going so we can enter you on the appropriate course that gives us the best chance of doing well.

Many Thanks

The online closing date for this event is fast approaching (19th November)

Entries can be made here.

Please see the attached flyer for the event which is being held at SYO's Burbage Moor event on Sunday 27th November.
NOC juniors (894 points) just pipped LEI (890 points) at today’s event at Byron’s Walk. NOC now progress through to the Yvette Baker final, which is being held on HALO’s Mausoleum Woods area, somewhere between Scunthorpe and Grimsby. The date for your diaries is Sunday the 4th of December.

A big thanks to Robert Parkinson for co-ordinating the team and Robert would also like to thank all of those who participated and especially those that ran on a different course to their usual choice.
All juniors, it is the Yvette Baker Trophy on Sunday at Byron`s Walk.

We need all our juniors to turn up and run.

The courses for the juniors to run are Yellow to Green with M/W 18 being the upper age range.

I unfortunately will not be there as I will be in Venice for the street race, however, Robert Parkinson will be organising the juniors for NOC.

If you are unsure what course to run please make sure that you talk with Robert.

Please do not run above the Green course if you are a junior.

We need a good spread of results across all courses so you may be asked to run a course lower than what you would normally run, to hopefully help the team score the necessary points to progress to the finals.

Hope you all have good runs.

Many Thanks

Mick Lord
Last weekend saw the Original Mountain Marathon take place in central Scotland. The weather wasn't that great but a few NOC members came out on top. NOC finished 7th in this year’s competition. Results can be found here.

Should NOC qualify for next year’s event then it is being staged by Roxburgh Reivers on 30th September at Teviothead between Carlisle and Hawick with an urban event in Carlisle on the previous day.
Good luck to all of those running in the final tomorrow. Sixty three NOC members have entered the competition to be hosted by DVO at the Longshaw Estate, near Sheffield, Derbyshire.
Last weekend saw the British Schools Score event take place at the Beaulieu Estate, Hampshire.

Top individual performances from NOC members were Chris Cutajar (representing Nottingham High School ) finishing 3rd in the year 7 boys category and Will Parkinson (Tuxford School) 3rd in the year 10/11 boys category.

Eleanor Cooley (Ranby House School) just missed out on a podium finish with a 4th in the year 7 girls category.

Junior co-ordinator Michael Lord has booked a couple of evenings climbing at Nottingham Climbing Centre on Monday 26th Sept and Monday 3rd of October between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

We have booked 7 places (a good bit of x training), we will have an instructor, with the aim to skill people up and to begin to enable them to use the centre and develop their climbing skills on their own.

I know its short notice, but booking it and getting times etc. have been a bit of a nightmare.

Each session will cost £5 if you make cheques payable to NOC.

People will be responsible for making their own transport arrangements.

Unfortunately I am away this weekend but if people e-mail ( e-mail address ) to let me know who would like to attend I will try and sort it out, sorry not many places, not sure of the take up and it becomes very expensive with 2 instructors.

I have some consent forms but people may need to fill one in if I haven’t one for them.

There is a lower age limit of 12 years of age.

Below is the address and website.

The Old Pool,
Rawson St,
New Basford,
Nottingham,
NG7 7FR

www.nottingham-climbing.co.uk We boast over 800 square metres of climbing facilities. Including; bouldering, superb top roping and excellent lead climbing. Inside the centre every group is catered for, from first time beginners to professionals requiring a world class training facility.

Our fully qualified instructors, with their in depth climbing knowledge, can provide specialist tuition on using the wall.

The Centre has a spectator area and a café overlooking the climbing which is open all day offering light refreshments to climbers, their friends and their family.
From tomorrow (Thursday 22nd September) Bramcote orienteering group is moving to the University campus for the winter, meeting at the University Sports Centre foyer, the site is perfect for the evening sessions because of the security lighting around campus. Fees for the evening session at the University will be £2/£1. Map location and further information can be found here.
Congratulations go to Peter Hodkinson on being selected to be a recipient of British Orienteering's 2011/12 TASS awards. The full announcement can be found here.
Congratulations to Richard Robinson, Helen Palmer and Peter Hodkinson on being selected for the Great Britain squad for the final rounds of the World Cup.

We look forward to hearing about their trips to the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

The full squad selections can be found here.
Thanks to Michael Lord for this review of last weekend’s Peter Palmers relay and a big thank you to Michael for organising the teams.

This years Peter Palmers took place in Stafford at Beacon Barracks over the weekend of 10th 11th of September, the weekend coincided with the London city race and people getting ready to make their first trips to university so these obviously affect numbers.

We did however still manage one full team and one ad hoc team made up of NOC, DVO and one of our “neighbouring” clubs RR. I would thank all the juniors who turned out to make this a very enjoyable event and certainly positive things for us to build on.

The two teams were, in leg order:-

NOC
1. Nic Malbon
2. Sam Horsewill
3. Will Parkinson
4. Jess Beresford
5. Hannah Horsewill
6. Ben Beresford

NOC/DVO
1. Harriet Lawson DVO
2. Nathan Lawson DVO
3. Rowan Lee
4. Jack Lord
5. Eleanor Cooley
6. Karen Maxwell RR

We were using the dreaded Emit punching system and unfortunately the NOC team mis-punched (definitely went to control but in the heat of competition), had this not happened we would have been a very credible 7th.

The ad-hoc team had good runs ending up 9th overall, Eleanor did fantastically well having not been orienteering long, doesn’t know anyone else and has never ran a relay, she also ran the leg on her own, so well done.

As well as good team runs and a very good team spirit and some good individual runs, we are doing very well at the juniors turning out for events such as PP, the Harvester, YB and others.

Sleeping was a bit strange but ok we were all crammed into one room 16 of us, I’m sure the room was only meant for 4 people.

Thanks to all the young people who turned out to represent the club.

Thanks also to the adults who gave a hand:
Robert Parkinson
John Cooley

Any questions about the format, event, course combos just let me know. Andrew's e-mail

New travel information : Please note that the A60 at Arnold will be closed on Sunday morning. Those coming from Nottingham will come across a diversion.

Parking is at Wellow House School, signing will be from the Wellow cross roads.

Peter Hubberstey has planned some good courses. The Technical ones give runners the opportunity to use their compass and read contours (not that common in Nottinghamshire)

There is a 15 minute walk to and from the start/finish.
Well done to Helen Palmer on her exploits this week at the World Championships being held in France.

It has been a very exciting week for everyone there and for those back home who have managed to follow the action of the various live TV pictures that have been available.

Helen was the top British woman on the long course. http://live.woc2011.fr/

Helen just qualified in 15th place in her heat on Saturday in a tough heat compared with the times in the other 2 heats (the top 15 in each heat qualify for the final).

This meant that she had the first start time in the Long distance final, which was held in the afternoon heat of Wednesday 17th August on the Bauges plateau, Savoy.

Despite some small mistakes at the first and 18th controls she came into the long run in first to be cheered by the British fans present. She did not hold the lead for long but ended up a very creditable 23rd place in a very long and physically/technically tough race.

Helen’s blog can be found at http://helvino.blogspot.com/
This years’ annual general meeting will be staged after the event at Brierley on Saturday 1st October 2011. As well as the A.G.M. there will be presentations for the Summer and Winter leagues. Further details will be published in the next NOC newsletter due at the end of August.
The Broxtowe Footsteps festival is a great way to get active in a relaxed and friendly environment, with all the family. It runs from Saturday 3rd September – Sunday 11th September. Full details of all the different events can be found in the leaflet here.

NOC will be taking part on THURSDAY 8th SEPTEMBER

All ages welcome. Enjoy learning to read an orienteering map, testing yourself with the fun mini-navigation challenges set up around the park. The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon (SLMM) took place last weekend. Many orienteering clubs had people taking part and NOC had their fair share of entrants.

NOC’ own team captain Andrew Powell showed everyone the way by winning the Harter Fell class with his partner for the weekend Tim Boxford. They won both days and ended up with a combined total time of 8 hours 17 mins.

Meanwhile on the Scafell course, one of NOC’s top performers Andrew Llewellyn and ex-NOC member Sarah O’Neil sprinted round in just over 12 hours to be the first “mixed” team home.

Well done to everyone who completed the courses on a very hot weekend in the Lakes.

Mike Hamilton (Chief Executive of British Orienteering) has been in touch and would like as many orienteers as possible to participate in a questionnaire.

Mike explains…

There is less than two years to run of our current Whole Sport Plan. With this in mind, we need to start thinking about the plan for the next period and are seeking views at an early stage. It’s worth noting that this plan for orienteering is nothing to do with sports councils and is everything to do with our understanding the needs and priorities of orienteers and orienteering clubs.

The following link is to a questionnaire, which is aimed at getting an initial sampling of members’ views towards the work done as part of the current Whole Sport Plan. There will be a more in-depth consultation period based on the ideas expressed at a later stage.

Link to the questionnaire

Please encourage as many of your club members as possible to have their say.

Many thanks

Mike Hamilton

The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Michael Wildgust visited the Forest Recreation Ground last Saturday for the National Families Sports Day.

He is pictured trying his hand at the “naughty numbers” game.

Mr Wildgust showed great promise with his newly acquired “O” skills, in the past he won an all England schools cross country championship and played football and cricket and was captain of both at school, later he played football for Arnold Town.

There are some photos of the day (many familiar faces) at picasaweb.google.com/orienteeringrob.

Just to let you know that we are going to be having a cake stall at DVO's event at Shining Cliff on Saturday 12th February so any donations on the day would be greatly appreciated. We will not be able to do hot drinks at this event as there is going to be a burger van who will be selling those so we need to sell lots of cakes! Thank you.

Hope to see you there.

Good luck to the Junior team for Sunday’s national final.

The Yvette Baker Trophy is the premier Junior Inter-Club competition for English and Welsh clubs. It is named after Britain's first World Orienteering Champion, who won Gold in the Short Distance event in Scotland in 1999.
Thanks to Gail Marie Lockwood and Remi Gauvain for their journalistic efforts in managing to have this article printed before last month’s Commpass Sport Cup qualifier. If you have been to an orienteering event and have a story to tell, please send Gail (see facebook) or Remi (e-mail) a message.
Congratulations to Helen Palmer on being selected for the British team. WSOC 2011 runs from 22nd to 27th March at Tänndalen in Sweden.

The full announcement can be found here and Helen’s blog is here.
Unfortunately Peter Cholerton has stepped down from his role as treasurer. The committee and club would like to thank Peter for all his hard work over the last two and a half years. Peter has produced a very detailed spreadsheet of NOC’s accounts and has left on a high, having successfully had last year’s accounts audited. Also thanks to Stephen Wright for the auditing. The summary of the accounts are attached below.

The treasurer is a key position within the club so the appointment of a new treasurer is a top priority. Any names or thoughts can be passed onto Steve Green.

Sherwood Pines is the venue for this fascinating video unearthed by ex-NOC member John Dalton. As you may well know that this year’s Robin Hood Trophy event will be based there on the 13th February. The video follows the exploits of Tim Tett of SYO as the team try to retain the trophy. There are many familiar faces from the various clubs who attended.

David Olivant goes on to explain. “The event was something of a milestone for NOC and helped develop the club’s reputation for excellent organisation. Sherwood Pines was then known as Clipstone and all the facilities (that is the car park) were at the south end of the current area. It was almost all very mature pine wood planted after the First World War and there was almost no bramble so it was possible to run straight across all the blocks. I think that the Organiser was the late and sadly missed Peter Bourne and the Planner was Peter Hubberstey who features in the video giving an excellent impression of a tree. Other NOC members in there are Mick Lucking and Keith Picksley. The mapper was Alan Gould who had spent 3 weeks camping out to survey the map and the current version is still very much based on Alan’s work, well all the good bits anyway”

David

We have managed to put the video on YouTube. It has been split into two parts as it is 23 minutes long and the longest allowed is 15 mins.

Also in converting the format, something went slightly wrong so the sound is now out by about 2 seconds but I don't think it will spoil it too much.

Part 1 is here.
Part 2 is here.
Calling all NOC Juniors, Mick Lord has been in touch.

Could you please confirm your attendance at the Yvette Baker at Hawkbatch on the 6th of FEB, if you could ring or e-mail me to confirm that you will be coming along.

I just need your S.I. card number.

We will be running 2 minibuses this time so that it gives us a bit more flexibility in picking people up. One of the minibuses will be leaving from Retford and winding its way down the other will be leaving from the South of the county (Micks House).

It is all looking good for it taking place this time so we need as many young people as we can to progress to the final.

If you can contact me on my e-mail or home 0115 9174451 or on 07824 626288.

I need people’s confirmation A.S.A.P.

Many Thanks

Mick Lord

Gill Costello the treasurer of “Friends of Bestwood Country Park” has been in touch wishing to highlight the news that the Park Ranger service at Bestwood (and other areas) may be lost completely.

NOC as an organisation feels it can’t directly comment on its members’ behalf but feels that the information be made available so they can take any action which they see fit as individuals.

Nottingham Post article : Hucknall Dispatch article

Here is the information from Gill.

The Friends of Bestwood Country Park group understands that Notts County Council are planning to cut out the Park Ranger service completely across the County, replacing it with a non-resident warden service with fewer members and costing between £8k - £10k each less. This would be a devastating loss to Bestwood Country Park, and would waste all the good work that has been done by its management in recent years to make the Park a safe place for users and for wildlife.

Our park covers 690 acres, with a long urban-fringe boundary and multiple access points - although there is a team of regular volunteers who help the rangers, there is no way that the Friends group and the volunteers alone could keep the park safe for its residents or police it for such events as your own.

The Friends group is writing to County Councillors asking to meet them to argue that the cuts being planned for the Conservation and Country Parks Dept of NCC is nearer 50% than the 25% they have said they want. We are asking for a reduced but ranger-led team to remain on site at Bestwood, which we think would still meet the 25% cut. We are also collecting signatures for a petition.

We hope we have your group’s support in this, so I’m attaching a copy of the petition, and also a summary of our arguments. Maybe you might get us some more signatures, if you agree with what we say? We are also encouraging people to write to their local County Councillor to protest at the complete cut of ranger presence on the Park, and ask for a smaller but ranger-led presence there. If anyone isn’t sure who their Councillor is its easy to check it from the Notts County Council website.

We will be collecting the petitions back in between 17-19 January. We will also be at the Winding House car park in Bestwood Village this Sunday, 9th January, 2-4 pm weather permitting, to collect signatures, and again at the Bestwood Lodge car park on Sunday 16th, 2-4 pm.

If anyone would like to register their comments, we would very much welcome that and we’ve set up a central email address to use - bestwoodcountrypark@hotmail.co.uk. We also have a discussion forum website at www.bestwood-country-park.co.uk which includes a thread with information on our campaign.

Look forward to hearing from you -

Best wishes

Gill
