Level 2 coach training vacancy
Level 2 coach training vacancy
Due to a late cancellation there is a space on a L2 course which starts on Sat 10th January at Brierley Forest Park close to M1 J28. It's a course like I have done a couple of times recently - doing all the practical elements and some time for discussions with the learners doing all the written tasks over an 8 week period and then meeting up again on Sat 21 March at the same venue to have the tasks marked and do a practical coaching session.
After that they have to do 4 other short written tasks and coach 6 sessions in a club, school or squad situation before being watched and assessed as the final assessment.
The cost is £405 (includes all resources, training and assessments). The fee would be slightly lower if 2 more people took part but the course will happen in any case as the 2 people who have enrolled have been waiting some time (Grants for this fee may be available)
If you know of anyone who is interested please pass this on so that they can contact me direct by phone or email.
Many thanks
Hilary Palmer

Cancellation of Sansom Wood Event
A number of club officials have visited the area. An excess of undergrowth including very significant areas of brambles would make the event unpleasant for competitors. Reluctantly the club has decided to cancel the event. We hope to add a replacement event to the calendar but this will be on a different date.

Rushcliffe Night Event 15/11/14 - course details.
Short, Medium, and Long Technical courses. Short is suitable for beginners and those who haven't done a night event before. Yellow standard approx. 2k Medium is for more experienced day orienteers. Light Green standard approx.3k Long is mass start at 1900. Runners will run 300m to a 'common' control and then run 3 loops of controls before returning for a final time to the common control and the finish. All competitors will do the same legs but the loops will be run in different orders to minimise following. A bit like a 'relay' with competitors racing against each other at night. It should be fun! Approx. 5.3k).

Jenkison outsprints Wastell
Jenkison outsprints Wastell
Over fifty competitors enjoyed the sun and terrain of Rushcliffe Country Park. Alternative attractions such as the Tour de France, Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix didn’t interfere with some great Summer orienteering.
A very competitive long technical course saw some fast times with Nigel Mockridge taking 1st place.
Michael Napier “doggedly” ran around the short technical course, whilst the Hagues had a family battle on the introductory course.
Complete newcomers to the sport saw the Jenkison family outsprint and overtake the Wastells at the finish control.
Some interesting comments received at the finish line included “The introductory course passed the playground between 1 and 2 which with young children became a distraction” Probably something for future planners and controllers to consider?
NOC’s Summer league now moves to Burntstump on the 20th July.

British Championships : NOC finish 2nd
British Championships : NOC finish 2nd
The team of Andy Llewellyn, Richard Robinson and Peter Hodkinson finished in 2nd place in the men's premier race, helping NOC to 3rd overall in the UK relay league. Andy lost a bit of time in the more intricate sections but Richard and Peter stormed through the field with the fastest 2nd and 3rd leg times to place NOC behind Interlopers but ahead of FVO.
That's the main relay season over now, so good luck to all over the summer orienteering months and hope you can fit it as many holiday events as possible.
Andy.

NOC Finish 2nd in the Harvester
NOC Finish 2nd in the Harvester
Thanks to a solid team performance, NOC finished 2nd overall in the open category in the Harvester night relay (pictures below)
Ant Squire ran a storming first leg, sneaking away from the pack in the early tricky controls and brought NOC home with a seven minute lead. This was followed up with solid runs from Harry Nicholson, Richard Robinson who rose to the challenge of finding the numerous small depressions in the dark. By now a pattern was emerging with FVO in the lead, NOC 2nd but Bristol not too far away. NOC newcomer Joe Taunton ran a controlled 4th leg only 30 seconds down on the fastest 4th leg to set Ben Beresford out in slightly darker conditions than we'd anticipated. Coming back from injury, Ben brought NOC in just a few minutes down on one of BOK's JWOC runners. Francesco then set out the short(ish) day leg in 3rd a few minutes down on BOK. Running against people an (undisclosed) fraction of his age, Francesco brought NOC within touch of BOK. Andy Llewellyn set out on last leg and ran a solid race and unknown to him, passed the BOK runner part way round the course to bring NOC in 2nd place. Good times.
As well as second overall, NOC won the Sutton Park Trophy for not having been in the top 3 for the last 5 years. Next year, we now won't be eligible for this trophy so we'll have to step it up and go for first!"

Thanks to the 43 NOC members who came and ran for the club today - an excellent turn out. Everyone i spoke to enjoyed the sunny weather and well planned courses despite the area being quite physical in places given the recent rain. Thanks also to those on the coach who showed patience in the various delays.
NOC came 4th in what was a very competitive qualifying round. Sadly this means we didn't qualify for the final, but we will back next year bigger, stronger and hopefully on time!
Next up are the JK and British relays - I will send out a request for entries shortly.

Night Orienteering - This Weekend
There is a NOC night event at Thieves Wood on Saturday 1st Feb. Short, Medium and Long courses are available with the easiest course providing an ideal introduction to night orienteering. If you do not have a headtorch and want to try night orienteering, come along anyway as the organiser has a number of club headtorches for loan to novices.

Yvette Baker Trophy - This Weekend
We would like to invite all NOC juniors to represent the club in the regional heat of the Yvette Baker Trophy. The heat is being held as part of the NOC EM League event at Thieves Wood near Mansfield on Sunday 2 February.
All junior members are eligible to compete and we hope as many of you as possible will come along and run for the club. Yellow, Orange, Light Green and Green are the competition courses with some restrictions by age or if you are a high level orienteer. The scoring system allows up to three junior boys and three junior girls to score on each course so please try to attend. Coach Robert Parkinson and Andrew Ridgway will be on hand near registration to provide advice if needed.

Compass Sport Cup
Compass Sport Cup
NOC will be competing in the Compass Sport Cup (the UK's premier orienteering club competition) qualifying round on Sunday 16th Feb at Irwell Valley near Manchester. The attached flyer contains further details of the round including how to enter. The NOC committee have kindly agreed to provide a fully subsidised coach to the event. I need your entry details and payments by 31 January 2014 but the earlier I receive entries the better.
For those new to the club (and for those that have forgotten!), the Compass Sport cup is the one event of the year where we get to run together as a club. There are a number of courses for specific age classes and the scores from members in each course are combined to give an overall score. The key to success is getting as many people from the club along as possible.
NOC has a great track record in the compass sport cup, finishing 2nd in the Final as recently as 2007 and winning outright in 2003. Hopefully we can revisit those dizzy heights in 2014!
Please let me know if you need any further information or help.
Kind regards
Andy Llewellyn
NOC Team Manager
