Walesby Information
Walesby Information
After visiting Walesby scout camp this morning, I would just like to pre-warn anyone travelling to the event that the approach road from the A614 is very icy and caution should be taken. Other than that, we have avoided another major snow fall, and the Met Office has removed the weather warning for this area. However, with the uncertainty of weather forecasting, please check the British Orienteering website before you travel.

Juniors’ final postponed
The Yvette Baker final planned for Sunday 5th December has been postponed. This is because of the severe weather conditions nationwide. The conditions at Hawkbatch itself are fine, however the concern is with regards to the risks posed by transporting large numbers of juniors across the country in snowy conditions.

Publicity in local publications
Publicity in local publications
Most people now seem to have a local magazine that businesses can advertise in. Quite a few have a community page where clubs can put their listings for free.
Our newly appointed publicity officer Remi Gauvin would love to hear about them.
So if you could send Remi the editor details or a copy of any local magazine you think we could advertise in, then this would be a great help. Remi’s e-mail.

Yvette Baker Trophy Final
Yvette Baker Trophy Final
Calling all NOC juniors and their parents!
The Yvette Baker Trophy final takes place on 5th Dec in the West Midlands at Hawkbatch in the Wyre Forest. Initial flyer is here .
We need all our juniors to turn out and put us in a good position to challenge for the trophy.
We are trying to find out if there is enough interest from the juniors and their parents to run a coach from the North of the county picking up along the way, all the young people who come and participate for the club help in this competition so it is important that all the juniors turn up run and support each other.
If young people are interested in coming on the coach could they please let me know a.s.a.p. so that we can get an idea of numbers.
There will be a full range of courses for parents to run at as well.
Further information from Mick Lord (NOC’s Junior Co-ordinator) e-mail him here or by telephone 0115 9174451

Juniors Go Water Skiing
Juniors Go Water Skiing
Nine juniors went Water Skiing at the National Watersport Centre on Saturday afternoon, after a really bright and sunny morning as we arrived it became overcast and dull (as well as chilly)
After a few problems getting on the wetsuits, people putting them on wrong way round and trying to get their foot through their arm hole we were ready to go.
We were put on the knee boards where you kneel down on a surfboard type thing (we were told they were easier to do), on the first pull most fell off within 25m of the start and a couple made the first corner until they came off.
This was not as easy as it looked, we had a couple of stars who managed to get all the way around Max and Sam and a few others who navigated the first corner and then came off, but most of us just made it to the first corner “time after time”.
The cold was getting to us all (well mainly the lads as the girls toughed it out till the end) so we retreated to try and get out of the wetsuits and get warm.
Everyone had a great time despite the cold.
Thank you to all the parent for transporting the young people around, quite a few of the parents seemed keen on having a go themselves but mainly in warmer climates.

Peter Palmers review
Peter Palmers review
Thanks to Mick Lord for this great review of the recent Peter Palmer relays event.
The club had a fantastic turnout at the Peter Palmers on home ground of Chetwynd Barracks; we had 16 young people running for the club.
Young People:-
Ben & Jess Beresford
Joe & Max Elliot
Sam & Hannah Horsewill
Ben & Jack Lord
Nick Malbon
Charlotte, Tom & Jordan Webster
Will Parkinson
Bethany Blunden
Jack Whickham
Keiran Huggan or as he first appeared in the results Karen.
Fiona Claxton who ran around with Bethany and deserves a big thank-you for arriving very early Sun morning to run a Yellow.
Also Sam and Hannah who arrived back from holiday in Switzerland at 6pm Sat evening and arrived to run for their club at 8pm sat evening.
We had 2 competitive teams and 4young people for a non-comp team who ran with a W16 from HH, we skipped the first leg and started on second it worked well in the end.
On the Sat evening most of ours chose not to take part in the army activities, I think all the SHOUTING by the army guys may have put them off.
A large group went to Tesco with Julie and thought that they were taking part in “supermarket sweep” filling up a trolley with lots of toys and food until they had to put it all back (spoilsports).
Sleep, I think the easiest answer to that is 200 young people in one room = no sleep.
We had a great team spirit throughout the event and some great runs, I would like to mention Bethany Blunden and Jack Whickham who have been going to the satellite clubs and made the brave move to come along to an event where they knew very few people, participated well and I hope that they will continue to enjoy the satellite clubs and participate in events.
I feel that the young people did the club proud all tried very hard on their courses and some ran out of their comfort zones, running the night legs when they really didn’t want to initially.
It is obvious that one of our areas for development is attracting and retaining young women into the sport and as such into the club, we could have easily had 3 competitive teams if we were able to call upon more young women.
Chetwynd was an interesting place to run and would make a good sprint race in the future, whilst there I was speaking with Major Drummond (rtd) he was telling me that they had set up a permanent course on the camp and were looking to stage more “civilian” events, I was also thinking that it may be good for the satellite club to meet their periodically if the military would allow it.

Calling all NOC juniors
Calling all NOC juniors
Yvette Baker Trophy (Junior Interclub Competition Regional Heat) this Sunday 19th September at Carsington Pastures, Derbyshire.
All NOC juniors are eligible to compete and we hope as many of you as possible will come and run for the club. There are courses from yellow to green, most juniors can run whichever course they normally take part on, with only some restrictions on age or if you are a high level orienteer. The scoring system is such that the more runners we get there, the more points we can deny the opposition, so everyone’s score helps the team. Boys and girls score separately. Please try to attend.
Young people who run the white courses normally but would like to compete and run a Yellow may be able to run with another young person on the Yellow course only, let Mick Lord know if you are thinking of this.
If young people would like to go but are unable to get there, please contact Mick as we may be able to organise individual lifts or get a minibus for the event, I am happy to organise a minibus even if just a few juniors would like to travel together.
We need as many juniors as possible running at the event on courses Yellow to Green.
Please contact Mick Lord if you need any more clarification.
More details can be found on the dvo website, entry will be in the normal way. This is also an EM league event. Don’t forget to tick the relevant box saying you are running in the Yvette Baker competition.
Who is Yvette Baker? Find out here.

Schools are back
Schools are back
Most pupils are now back at their schools in Nottinghamshire, so now would be a good time to mention the two major schools orienteering events that are taking place this year.
The British Schools Score Championships will take place on the 9th October 2010 at Witton Park Blackburn and the British Schools Orienteering Championships will take place on 21st November 2009 near Broxbourne, Hertfordshire.
The closing date for entries for the Score Championships is the 21st September 2010. More details and the entry forms are available on the British Schools website (click here).
Please note: Schools can now join the association for free! So it would be great to see as many pupils as possible from NOC’s catchment area at the events.
A flyer for the November event is pictured below.

Peter Palmer Thanks
Peter Palmer Thanks
A big thank-you to all the 16 young people who took part in the Peter Palmer relays.
It was good to get so many young people participating at Chetwynd Barracks.
Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves and their runs and we hope that soon everyone else will get the opportunity to run on what appears to be a good area.
Also thanks to those who helped out with the squad on the night, The Lords, The Beresfords and Jim Clarke.

Alan Jones
Alan Jones
Members will be sad to know that Alan Jones (a long time member of NOC) passed away last week after a long illness.
He joined the club back in 1984 and was responsible for introducing the rest of the Jones and Streb families to the sport as well as maintaining the clubs equipment for many years.
I am sure he will be sadly missed by all that knew him both personally and as a fellow club member.

Peter Palmer relays
Peter Palmer relays
Calling all junior club members! The Peter Palmer relays are coming up and we hope to enter as many teams as possible.
The event will be held over the weekend of 4th and 5th September. This is your opportunity to represent your club and at the same time enjoy fun weekend for juniors.
All standards are catered for from Yellow to Light Green. We can enter up to 3 runners on the yellow leg so if you haven't done many events at yellow, don't worry. The first and possibly 2nd leg will be run in the dark, the rest are day legs. For those wishing to compete in the Lincoln City race you will be finished in time to get there. Ask for a late start.
The cost will be £8 per runner including meals.
We have to have a minimum of 2 girls in each time so the number of teams which we can enter may depend upon the number of girls who will turn up and run.
There is a full programme of activities on the Saturday night. It looks like a great weekend with lots of other juniors from around the country.
A flyer for the event is here here
If you can run and want to be part of this please e-mail Jim Clarke here
Remember its your club and it needs your support.
Jim Clarke
P.S. The Yvette Baker Trophy date is the 19th September 2010 (Carsington Pastures), please add this date to your diary, further details to follow.

Scottish Relay Championships
Scottish Relay Championships
A Men’s NOC Team of Andy Llewellyn, Richard Robinson and Peter Hodkinson finished this Years UK Relay League season with 3rd place at the Scottish Champs relays at Rannoch Forest in central Scotland. Andy got the team off to a good start on first leg coming back in 4th placed in a time of just over 37mins (5.8km) closely between Interlopers and a strong FVO second team and a couple of minutes down on the lead of Edinburgh University and under a minute behind second placed FVO. Richard set off and was soon alongside the Interlopers Russian International Jegor Kostylev (the individual winner) who made a small mistake but was unable to keep up with the Russians blistering pace. However, Richard managed to overhaul the FVO runner in 2nd and came back in 3rd with a time of just over 35mins (5.7km) with a healthy 2mins lead over FVO; just over 1min behind Interlopers and 3mins behind Edinburgh Uni. Peter went off chasing strong runners from Interlopers (Murray Strain) and Edinburgh Uni (Doug Tullie) hoping they made mistakes but despite another good performance from Peter there were no slip ups from the top teams. However, Peter managed to increase the lead over FVO to over 5 minutes for a comfortable 3rd place finish (35mins for 5.8km).
Despite going into this last race in equal third place with FVO in the UK Relay league, NOC Men ended in 5th position as INT had only previously competed in 2 races (best 3 of 4 to count), and FVO had a worse result than NOC to be removed and had a higher finish on count back (2nd at Harvester) therefore finishing in a very credible position behind some very strong teams.
UK Relay league Men’s final standings: 1st SHUOC – 75; 2nd SYO – 60; 3rd INT– 60; 4th FVO – 54; 5th NOC – 54

British Long Distance Championships 2010
British Long Distance Championships 2010
Last weekend saw a hive of activity on Cannock Chase as the British Championships took place.
Liz Parkinson turned out to be NOC’s top performer on the individual courses, notching 2nd place on W18L.
Unfortunately 4th seemed to be NOC’s bogey number.
W60L Hilary Palmer 4th
W21S Emily Powell 4th
M55L Michael Napier 4th
M50S Paul Morris 4th
W50S Christine Elliott 5th
The relays proved to be just as frustrating. The M50 class saw the combination of Lomas/Napier/Evans just pip Lucking/Morris/Elliott, the teams finishing 5th and 6th, Silver evading the team by just 45 seconds.
Next years’ event is just up the road in Sheffield, the 7th and 8th May 2011 (the weekend after the early May bank holiday)

Winter League results
Just in case you missed it, the results from the winter league have been published, with just the three events making up our first ever winter league it was a very close in the points tally. The other brilliant news is that three of our winners are very new to the sport and had either attended the club’s training nights or the pre-event coaching. So, well done to all those involved. Next year’s winter league will be bigger and better and talking about leagues don’t forget our summer league kicks off very soon at Bulwell Hall Park on the 25th April.

JK review
JK review
The Easter weekend saw many NOC members travel down to Devon for the annual JK orienteering experience.
Day 1 saw the sprints at Bicton College, apparently it was the highest ever number of entries for the JK Sprint.
Peter Hodkinson and Hilary Plamer came out on top in some very competitive racing, Helen Palmer nearly made it a family double coming 2nd and Jenny Evans made a great 3rd on her course. So day 1 went to the ladies of NOC.
Day 2 will be remembered by everyone for the MUD at Cookworthy forest. Many seasoned runners commented that they had never seen as much mud as they encountered on the Saturday. Day 3 went from mud to sand as the JK moved to the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows. A very technical area which caught out a few people. David Olivant ended in top spot on the M60S with Peter Hodkinson using his speed on the sand to take the overall M20E title. Samuel Horsewill, David Booker and Laura Evans came 2nd in their respective classes, with Robert Drew and Hilary Palmer both coming home 3rd.
For those who messed up big style then “fortunately” the relays were also at Braunton so a few demons could be expelled the following day!

Services to Orienteering awards
Services to Orienteering awards
Do you know of a NOC member who you think deserves an award?
The British Orienteering Services to Orienteering Awards are to recognise and acknowledge the great work done by volunteers in orienteering. We should celebrate the many different sorts of volunteering undertaken by members including for example, those that have made club maps, run the welcoming event registration / help desk, managed the club equipment store, run the club results service etc.
These club volunteers carry out many tasks which they enjoy and do not expect any reward but continue to do the jobs because they enjoy being able to put something back into the sport – this is your chance to show your thanks to the unsung heroes of club volunteering!
All members can nominate someone they believe deserves a Services to Orienteering Award.
Steve Green is co-ordinating our club’s nominations, so please just send Steve (e-mail here) a note with any suggestions and a quick note on why they should receive the award. It’s not our decision who wins but we can as a club come up with the names we want to put forward.

See the map for yourself and re-live those runs on NOC’s Routegadget page http://www.noc-uk.org/gadget/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi , once again well done to David on winning the award.
The Walsh Trophy
The trophy is made of old walnut with a triangular cross section and an etched plate with an image of Canary Wharf, London. It is awarded annually to the best urban or sprint map drawn to ISSOM specification.

NOC 2010 Club Championships
NOC 2010 Club Championships
The start times for the event on Sunday are now available here as well as the final details now being published on the LEI website www.leioc.org.uk
Turnout from NOC is on the up again, with so far a fantastic 76 people entered. Last year’s NOC club championships had 55 NOC competitors on the day (Cademan and Thringstone Woods) and the year before that 46 (Tankersley).
As well as the NOC champs. it is also a National Event, the Midland Championships & Future Champions Cup, so there is plenty to play for.
Further rules for the day.
You must be a member of NOC to qualify for the NOC Club championships!
In each age group the fastest NOC member to successfully finish the “top” age class course will be that particular NOC champion. If there is no finisher then the next course in that age group will be used and so on.
So for the seniors it will be the order of E,L,S and V
For juniors it will be A and then B. If there is an equivalent colour coded course (as defined in the final details) then that may come into consideration as well.
There should be no shadowing of juniors (or adults)
Have a great run, enjoy the day and an area that hasn’t been used for nearly 30 years.

Yes! NOC are absolutely delighted to announce that their application for a grant from Sport England has been successful.
For those avid fans who delight in reading the committee minutes (click here), you will already know the outline of the bid.
For the rest, well, in summary, the club will now be able to fund a club development officer for 1 year and be able to acquire a full set of electronic (S.I.) kit for all our future events.

Coaching at Burntstump Country Park
Coaching at Burntstump Country Park
NOC will be providing another coaching session on Saturday 20th March, from 10.30 am to 12 noon.
Hilary Palmer will be overseeing the activities.
Parking is in the upper overspill car park (free) or you can pay in the lower car park (i.e. the one next to the toilet block)
Coaching for all ages (yellow moving up to orange courses and those who do harder courses as well) will be based at the end of the grassy area of the park beyond the cricket pitch near the pond.
Emphasis will be on using the compass: rough setting of the map and aiming off and more accurate bearings compass work.
It would be helpful to know numbers in advance so please email Hilary

NOC Club Championship 2010
NOC Club Championship 2010
This will be held in conjunction with the Midland Champs at Belvoir Castle Estate, Sunday 21st March.
After last year’s middle distance event the quest is on to find who are the club champions at the longer distances.
NOC competitors should enter the 'top' class for their age group, for most people it will be the ‘A’ or ‘Long’ class. However for example M/W18 etc. this should be elite rather than long.
Most orienteers will compete on terrain that has not been used for competitions for nearly 30 years, so if you are normally running “short” why not give “long” a go this time, if just for once this year?
Entries are now open and further details are here. The first closing date for cheaper entires is fast approaching (1st March 2010)
As well as the NOC club champs it is also a National Event & Midland Championships & Future Champions Cup!

Robin Hood Trophy
Robin Hood Trophy
Unfortunately no club at Blidworth had the required number of competitors this year to win the trophy and so sadly the RHT will not be awarded.
A special mention and thanks to Michael Napier for some exhaustive analysis of the results, there were numerous results depending on the various criteria that could have been applied, but it was decided that on this occasion we would stick with the rules of engagement that were published in the final details.
The NOC committee will be looking into the rules and maybe a new format for a future RHT. We hope to make it as inclusive as is possible.

New British Orienteering Rankings List
New British Orienteering Rankings List
British Orienteering recently launched a ranking list of orienteers, based on results from ranking events. The new ranking system includes everyone in a single list, which can then be filtered (by age class, gender, and by club). The list also shows the number of positions you have moved up, or down, since the previous week.
Here's the ranking list of NOC members.
Further details of the new scheme can be found on the British Orienteering website here.

Relay Entries
Relay Entries
Entries for relay teams at the JK and British have to be made through me(Simon Elliott) on behalf of NOC.
JK relays Monday April 5th / British relays Sunday May 2nd
In order not to pay excessive amounts for entering late, the closing dates are:

Clearly if you can let me know about both events at the same time it would be much easier.
The age classes are slightly different for the two event - please look on the event web sites to see which you would like to run in.

East Midlands Championships at Blidworth
East Midlands Championships at Blidworth
Just to reassure folk, everything is looking good for the event at Blidworth on the 7th February.
As a result of the recent thaw the snow has gone, parking will be in a good firm field and that the event will go ahead unless there is a dramatic deterioration in the weather that lasts through to the event.
The position will be reassessed nearer the event date but we are confident it will proceed as planned.
We hope to get the final details out later this week.

Ray’s the man
Ray Barnes is featured(a full page spread) in the latest magazine of the International Orienteering Federation.
As you probably know Ray is our website technical guru, what he doesn’t know about website design isn’t worth knowing. He has also over the years at some point in time filled nearly every committee position, he’s been the chair twice!
Ray was even down from his North-East home to run both the Saturday night and Sunday morning event at Rufford
So to read more on “The man behind the rankings” and share Ray’s moment in the spotlight visit the website here and view the O-zine 4 2009 file. He is on page six.

Rufford Coaching on Sunday
Rufford Coaching on Sunday
NOC are hoping to provide coaching at most of their events over the next few months. Over the course of fixtures they should cater for all skill levels within the club.
The first of these will be on Sunday at the local Rufford Country Park event.
This session will start at 10:00 a.m. and will cover a few of the basics for absolute beginners and those who wish to re-trace some of those essential skills.
A couple of cone exercises will be followed by a map walk, this will leave plenty of time to then enjoy a run/jog/walk on the courses available.
Advice on which course to tackle will be available and the coaches will also be on hand after your run to discuss the route and answer any questions you have.
