At the final of the Yvette Baker Trophy held today at Normanby Hall near Scunthorpe, a strong team of juniors from NOC maintained the club's record of high achievement in this annual inter-club junior competition. The winning club was Octavian Droobers with 890 points, NOC were second with 871 and West Cumbria OC were third on 869.

Well done to all the NOC juniors for attending.

Compass Sport Cup Qualifying Round
Brandon Park, Thetford
Sunday 13th January 2008

The first round of the 2008 Compass Sport Cup is very early next year so the deadline for entries is tight particularly allowing for Christmas and New Year.

All entries need to be done through the club on this form so I need to know who wishes to be entered by Friday 21st December at the latest please.

If there is the demand we will be taking a coach - this will be FREE but I do need to know now if you would like to travel on it.

Simon Elliott
Pauline Olivant writes to all NOC Juniors:
I am still waiting for more details about the Yvette Baker Trophy Final. When I receive them I will need to get the NOC team entered quickly - so please can you let me know the following details as soon as possible.
  1. If you are able to run?
  2. Your BOF number if you have one
  3. Your SI ecard number if you have one
  4. If you will need transport, (limited amount booked at present, we may be able to share cars as well)
  5. If your parents are going and maybe able to offer a lift to someone if needed.
We were 5th last year. I am sure we can do better this year, everyone gets a score so even if you don't score for the team you will help push down the scores of other teams. So we need as many of NOC juniors to compete as possible, especially the ones who don't have gold times at regional events as they can often compete on a lower course than they may normally do and therefore score much higher for the team than they might expect.
Please eMail ASAP
I know that we've only just had this year's final, however the first round of the 2008 competition is Sunday 13th January.

We have a choice of venues:
  • Sherbrook and Brockton, Cannock Chase, just down the road but against strong clubs like OD and Walton Chasers
  • Brandon, Theford, considerably further away but against weaker clubs and an easier route, competition wise, to the final.
I've asked the committee for a view on which event we should choose but feel free to let me know your preference - are you happy to travel to Thetford in early January?

The final is Sunday 19th October at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield

Andrew Powell is my assistant with special responsibility for team selection. This is primariy due to the fact that when I was 'persuaded' to take on the Captain position I already knew that I wouldn't be at events like next year's JK. Feel free to discuss any team issues with myself or Andrew.

Simon Elliott, New Team Captain

I've just created a Poll on the Members' section of the Forum. You can cast your vote there. Ray
There will be an individual Orienteering competition for Scouts / Guides / Schools at Walesby on 16th December.

Full details and entry form.
Thanks to everyone who helped the club to an excellent 2nd place on Sunday, both by running and through helping. It was a great way for me to finish my term as team captain.

It was close the whole way but OD edged us out at the end. As runners-up we were given a tin of chocolates and five Compass Sport caps as prizes. The chocolates will be at the AGM on Thursday as an extra incentive to attend. If you competed or helped at the event and would like one of the caps then please let me know. Richard
The Revised Agenda for the AGM is available.

Sorry for the delay, but the road crossing had been given zero time in the split times file. Everyone on the three courses from the Sansom start just ended at the road! File now edited to a nominal crossing time of 10 seconds.

Izi Barton, Site Manager at the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve writes:

As some of you may be aware we are going for a £50 million bid with the BIG lottery to revamp Sherwood Forest and we need as many people as we can to sign up to vote for us in December when hopefully we will make it through to the televised vote.

If you get a chance please visit the Living Legend website at www.robinhood.co.uk to find out more and sign up to vote!

Please let as many people as you can know about the project and get them to sign up to vote for us - we need all the votes we can get as we are up against some stiff competition including the Eden Project and we really want to make this fantastic opportunity happen for Sherwood.

Well done to all the NOC juniors at the weekend, Peter Hodkinson, James Taylor, Fiona Claxton, Jenny Evans and Elizabeth Parkinson all represented England at the Junior Home Internationals in Northern Ireland, Jenny won her class, whilst Peter was second.

Meanwhile the rest of the club juniors were competing in the regional round of the Yvette Baker competition, the scores couldn't have been closer, DV0 889, NOC 890, with SYO also fielding a full team and taking part in our round, both DVO and NOC will go forward to the final.

So please put Dec 2nd in your diaries, we are off to Normanby Hall near Scunthorpe for the YBT Final.

A NOC first team of Fi Claxton, James Taylor, Jenny Evans, Craig Wood, Ben Lord, William Parkinson and Peter Hodkinson finished in fourth position on the Joan George Trophy (handicap - total age less than 90) and eighth overall out of 38 teams. The two other NOC teams competing for the same trophy were unfortunately disqualified.

The event hosted by the British Army at barracks near Yardley, Northamptonshire proved to be an ideal location with evening facilities including football, volleyball and tug-of-war and an ultra sprint run relay prior to a supper provided by the Army all adjacent to each other.

Following a few hours sleep the first leg runners armed with head torches went off in a mass start at 4:50am in fog which made the courses even more difficult. The area, used for military training, though largely flat, featured a number of munitions buildings each surrounded by a high bank and a number of ponds. These were connected by a complex path and ride network that proved difficult in the dark. The area was a mix of open and forest with a variety of runnability.

Once the daylight came and the fog lifted the racing order started to sort itself out. The Leeds team 'AIRE' came home in first position on the trophy in 3h 26m just three minutes ahead of the young Warwickshire Team 'Octavian Droobers' who took the Joan George Trophy. South London completed the top three a further four minutes behind boosted by their four foreign imports (two from Sweden and two from Latvia). The other trophy on offer was the Norwich Anniversary Trophy which was won by 'SARUM' of Wiltshire who finished in 4th position overall.

Despite no podium places for NOC, the event was thoroughly enjoyed by the 19-strong NOC junior team and the event provided valuable experience for the years to come.     Richard Robinson
Just a reminder that club training night starts again this Thursday, 6th
Last Sunday saw Lincoln stage a "City Race" - quite different to normal orienteering. It was a very enjoyable event despite a few funny looks from the public.

The courses went a variety of different ways because the juniors jumped across the canal a few times and the senior courses went up a bit nearer the cathedral.

The winners of the open courses were Ollie and Jenny Johnson. The winners of the veteran courses were Roger Thetford and Jane Halliday and the winner of the junior course was Peter Hodkinson.

The mayor of Lincoln was there to start the race and to present the prizes.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the race - Lincoln is a very good city to orienteer in.     Hannah Horsewill
Just a reminder that the closing date for the Lincoln City Street Race is 24th August. Event Details.
The Scottish Six Day in the first week of August was a very hard but very fun week.
Everyone who went enjoyed it.
Over 60 members of NOC went. Lots of NOC members did very well.
  1st M16A Peter Hodkinson
  2nd M20S Rhys Roberts
  2nd W60L Hilary Palmer

NOC also had some people who did well but did not quite come top 3:
  M21S Rob Palmer 6th
  M40S Andy Sykes 5th
  M45S Nick Evans 5th
  M60S Peter Hubberstey 6th
  M80S Bert Bradshaw 4th
  W14A Jenny Evans 7th
  W20L Rose Hodkinson 7th

On day 3 the occupants of Invereshie House held a little NOC get-together with tea and scones. It was a great way to end a hard day's orienteering.

Overall everyone enjoyed taking part in the Scottish and will look forward to Tay 2009.

Thank you to all who responded to the recent questionnaire about the future development of the club.

At a Committee meeting last week we discussed these responses and various other ideas at great length, and we have now rationalised and grouped them and put together a draft Development Plan for the next 12 months. This has still to be finalised but when it is complete will be added to the web and will be included within the next issue of Black & Green.

Needless to say some of the detail has disappeared when all of the good ideas and suggestions were condensed into a series of short statements but the Committee are fully aware of your concerns, new proposals, and other valuable feedback, and we shall endeavor to incorporate this into the ongoing work for the next 12 months...and beyond.

The new plan that we have put together for 2007/08 has been built upon the existing core areas of development that were successfully taking place, has updated them where necessary, and because orienteering, like many other activities, is constantly evolving has various new and specific future actions added.

In order to achieve, and hopefully exceed, the aims of this Development Plan, and to help the club to even greater successes we shall need some help from you, the club members.

The Committee will be contacting various people who we believe may have the particular skills that we need to help us with some of the actions from our Development Plan, but if you think you might be able to offer a few hours to help then don't hesitate, just ring or email or grab one of us at the next event!

Finally, a reminder - it's the Little John Relays on Sunday (01/07/07) at Bramcote. Details are on the left hand side of the screen.

Thanks again   Dave
This year's Peter Palmer Junior Relays are on the 8th/9th of September at Longmoor Camp in South Central territory, as used for the Junior Inter Regionals Champs last year. As before for this competition, we will travel down from Nottingham in the minibus on the Saturday and there will be the usual five-a-side football competition for those that want to play in the evening.

The PP relay is a six person relay that starts at 4:30 in the morning with the first 1½ legs being in the dark. Standard of legs is from Yellow up to Green. Any NOC member in the age categories M/W12-18 can take part in the event. If you are available and would like to run, could you please let me know as early as possible and certainly by 1st August.

If you would like further infomation regarding this competition then please let me know.   Richard
NOC's Winning Team Congratulations to our winning team taking the Sutton Trophy at the Harvester Relays held on 4th June at Penhale Sands in Cornwall.

This event is the flagship relay for Night Orienteering in the UK, and was held on the complex sand dunes in warm but increasingly misty conditions.

There was a close battle between the top three teams right from the midnight start, with many changes of lead until the final leg when only a minute separated the top three teams, and NOC was able to sustain 2nd place overall.

Our team of Nigel Mockridge, Michael Napier, Richard Robinson, Mick Lucking, Andrew Powell, Rob Palmer, Peter Forester win the Sutton Park Trophy on the probably unique basis of being "first team not in 1st three in last five years".

There were 3 items of clothing left in the NOC tent after the relays yesterday.
1) old style NOC top, short sleeved size 3. 2) reversible grey and red fleece/waterproof jacket - probably a small adult size. 3) pale blue medium size t-shirt with quotation about losing your mind.
I have all 3 items.

Strong performances from the NOC members selected to represent England at the annual 5-way Interland competition held at Libin in Belgium. with Jenny Evans winning the W14 and Hilary Palmer coming second on W60 helping England to joint first place with the French-speaking Belgian team.

With Elizabeth Parkinson, Peter Hodkinson, Andrew Llewellyn and Kevin Lomas also running, NOC was well represented, providing 6 of the 42 members of the England team. The other teams who take part are from Netherlands, Germany and the Flemish speaking Belgians.

Event Results
The provisional result from Hay Wood is:
OD 2353 NOC 2273 WCH 2092 HOC 1988 NGOC 1744 LEI 1727
so as OD were in top three at 2006 final (indeed they won), then NOC go through to the Final - on home ground at Blidworth on October 14th.

Well done everybody !

Some of us have visited Kidney Clump in the last 10 days and have seen the affect of the January storm on the trees. Every path track and ride was blocked by fallen trees. There is quite a bit of 'leaning' timber also. Forestry Commission have opened up the two bridleways subsequently, but they will not have a contractor in to clear the remaining fallen trees until after our planned event. As it is the area is not siutable or safe to use.

Kidney Clump was to be used by all courses, but it was important that the white and yellow courses were located there as the terrain facilitates such courses whereas Manton wood could not. Kidney Clump also added length to enable a green course to be accommodated.

As the event organiser I have had discussions with interested parties over this last weekend which have led to the conclusion that it is not possible for Manton Wood alone to accommodate a C5 event. If we only had the Manton map without Kidney Clump - we would have been considering the area for a summer league event only.    Bob Alderson

NOC will be competing at Hay Wood, Warwickshire (about 5 miles from J4 on M42) in the regional round of the Compass Sport Cup.

We are playing WCH, OD, NGOC, HOC and LEI. This will mean much stiffer competition to get to the final than in previous years, however due to OD winning the final last year an extra team will make it to the final if OD were to win the round. We therefore really do need everyone to attend the event, with the final being on home territory at Blidworth we don't want to miss out on the chance of winning the cup this year.
LOG have informed us that the recent storms may have affected Staplewood Woods so much that the event might have to be cancelled.
