The results arrived this morning without any more clarification, so I cannot give any more details! (see 10-Dec below).
The NOC Juniors had been nominated as 'Junior Team of the Year' and were invited to attend the Nottinghamshire County Council Sports Review of 1998.

The team was placed 4th, so no prize this year, but still it is great top see our sport recognised at such a prestigious event.

The juniors were represented at the ceremony by Helen P, Chris H, Richard R and Stephen W.
NOC lost out to WCH in the final by 384 to 388. The only other score known is third place for EBOR with 333.

More details later.
You can now post your own news stories to the NOC web pages. The link is on the main index, and in the banner to this news section.
The page could also be used as a forum for exchanging lifts etc.

You'll need a password to do this. It is printed in the December 1998 Black and Green.
At last night's EMOA it was pointed out that as DVO were not drawn in the same group (for the Compass Sport Cup) as the other East Midlands clubs, the EM champs couldn't take place at Brandon on 10th Jan 1999

Another event was being sought, probably Hopwas Hays on 24th Jan.
The draw has just been published. Under the new structure of a first round, then a final round, we are in a group playing mostly clubs to our south and east: HH, LEI, LOK, NOR, and WAOC

The round will be played on 10th January 1999 at Brandon Forest at the same event as the East Midlands Championships.

Janet Evans will be organising a coach.
A very sucessful weekend for the club.

At the British Night Champs we won three trophies, Stephen Wright M16, Chris Hodkinson M18, and Michael Napier M45, with a dominant one-two on M16 with Tim Blaney second and on M18 with Richard Robinson only seconds behind Chris.

Adding the following day courses to the night scores, Stephen and Chris then won M16 and M18 in the 'Tinto Twin'.

In different circumstances we may have won more courses. Michael was unavailable to compete at the day event, and Mick Lucking who ran M40 for the night, coming second, then ran M35 for the day, and won that course. The Tinto prizes are awarded by adding night and day times in the same class, and Mick would have run the same course had he ran M35 at night, and would have won that because the other M35s were slower than the leading M40! Shall I explain that again?

From: "Andrew Kelly" Date: Sun, 18 Oct 1998 22:11:57 +0100 Subject: Compass Sport Cup and Trophy finals. Compass Sport Cup Final, Slaley

In the semis, Nottinghamshire had the most convincing win of the day, 84-49 against Southdowns, only losing one of the 7 classes. South Yorkshire were almost equally convincing with their 77.5-53.5 victory over Lakeland, only letting slip both the junior classes, recognised beforehand as the Yorkshire club's potential Achilles heel.

This set up a classic final. The two neighbours currently have completely different strengths and weaknesses: Nottinghamshire's youngsters up against South Yorkshire's seniors and vets. And it was a close call, particularly with W18s Helen Palmer and Nicola Olivant running rampant amongst the Yorkshire club's W21s. The loss of Jenny James and Karen Dalton exacerbated the situation, but Helen Palmer's 5 minute victory over senior international Helen Hargreaves was one of the results of the day, setting up an unexpected 11-10 victory for the Midlands club. Similarly, Chris Hodkinson and Richard Robinson saw off SYO's vets in the M18-/M45+ Blue 2 class, to give Nottinghamshire another 3 point advantage. With victories in both junior courses, 9-3 and 9-5, the Nottinghamshire youngsters had given the club almost 14 points advantage.

However, SYO's traditional strengths told. The Yorkshire club's M21s decimated their opposition, scoring a maximum 15-6, and finishing 5 runners before NOC's first. In spite of Peter Forester's efforts (another under-21), SYO also clawed back another 3 points in the Brown 2, winning 12-9, and the final nail in the coffin came with SYO's second cleansweep of the day, in the W40+/M60+ group on Green.

Final result 69-62 to SYO, and one of the best fought finals yet. SYO have now won 7 of the 16 competitions, but its Nottinghamshire who look especially strong for the future.
We reached the Final !

In the semi-final, NOC beat SO by 84-49, and SYO beat LOC by 77.5-53.5. Rescoring for the final, we narrowly lost to our northern neighbours by 62-69.

Full details are on NATO Web Site.

This was much closer than our loss in the final to MDOC last year, in fact it shows a difference of only two or three runners!

Next year's competition will be to a completely new scoring system, so it remains to be seen which clubs are suited. Certainly our investment in the future of O via the Juniors is not reflected in the old system.

A very special thank you to Janet for arranging everything from Round One right through to the weekend at Hadrian's Wall.

After losing narrowly to Walton Chasers last year, NOC decisivly won the Peter Palmer Junior Relay at a drenched Ashton Court, Bristol. The team led the whole way, with a final margin of over ten minutes.

Electronic punching was in use and this later showed that the second and third place finishers (WCH and SLOW) had mispunched and were therefore disqualified. After some delay, NOC were given the Cup, so they could get home, leaving the organisers to resolve the other placings.

The team was Richard Robinson, Stephen Wright, Christopher Hodkinson, Helen Palmer, Colin Olivant, David Hodkinson, Emily Talbot and Alistair Footitt.

Both junior night competitions have been won by NOC this year, adding this trophy to the Harvester Junior that they have held for the last two years.
Eddie Nicholson has arranged coaching for the morning of Saturday 10th October, at the southern side of Sherwood Pines. Approach along the Eakring Road from the A614. 10am-1pm. All club members welcome whatever your standard.
Because of fixtures pressures during October, it has not been possible to arrange the larger scale AGM as per the last two years. Consequently a business-only AGM will be held at the Scout Hall, Mona Road, Lady Bay, West Bridgford on Wednesday 28th October starting at 8pm.

The prize giving and open meeting will be held later, most likely after the Xmas Novelty event in Wollaton Park on Dec 27th.

By the way, the AGM does require a quorum of 20, and there are some resolutions to be passed, so please do come.
Will continue from the Olivants until 8th October.
Then from Ray Barnes', from 15th October until 17th December with a HASH on 12th November.
Then from Michael Napier's from 7th January 1999.

There will be runs of differing lengths to suit whoever comes. Arrive by 18:30 because we leave at 18:40 prompt.
Dec 13th, Hope Woodlands, near Bamford, Full Details

As in previous years the Club Champion (and 2nd and 3rd and Best Newcomer) will be determined by %age Gold time achieved whatever class you run on the day. An unofficial Gold time is used for 'B' courses.
First in Forest was Stuart Hatfield.
The Robby Knudd Trophy was won by Colin Olivant, Stephen Wright and Clare Claxton
Pauline Olivant has been appointed to the BOF position of Midlands and East Anglia Schools Development Officer.

See BOF Link no longer available.
Score was NOC 77 TVOC 56.

Finals in Northumberland, October 18th. Janet has booked 50 places at Once Brewed Youth Hostel for the night of October 17th. Your bed will be assured when she gets your cash on a first come, first served basis. A coach or some mini-buses may be arranged.

We expect to be against Southdown OC in the semi final, the other semi is thought to be LOC v SYO.
Subject to checking etc etc, it is believed that we won the match against TVOC at Kings Wood.

Next stop is the finals (again!), with a FULL TEAM please !!!
Helen Palmer (1st year W18) is in the GB team for the Junior World Orienteering Champs which will be held near Reims, France during the week 13 - 17th July. There will be Classic and Short races and the competition finishes with Relays. Helen is the youngest of the team of twelve (6 men and 6 women)
Despite all the last minute withdrawals through injury and sickness, and the clash with other events, the two teams competed well, finishing 3rd and 9th, once again being the first 'O' club. We were presented with a large box of chocolate bars, which may find their way onto the coach this weekend for consumption on the way back.

A special thank you to Janet Evans for persevering with the extremely trying task of getting the teams organised.

Oh, and yes the winners were a certain running club with a close association with watersports.
Helen Palmer has been invited to join the GB Junior Squad. Congratulations!
The NOC qualifiers (best 15 selected) for the FCC Final to be run on ( / / ) are:

W18: Helen Palmer (2nd), Nicola Olivant (5th), Fiona Munton (15th).
M18: Alistair Footitt (7th), Chris Hodkinson (9th), Richard Robinson (13th).
M20: Robert Palmer (10th).
We fielded three teams
Juniors won the Junior class and the B race retaining trophy from last year.
Women came home second in their class.
Open came home 15th? out of about 30 teams.
So for the last three years NOC have won a Harvester trophy!
After some transport difficulties, a very tired team from the UK arrived only a few hours before their races. Lack of a proper training event contributed to the lack of any star performances. The terrain was wooded sand dunes and some of the times were extremely long, despite most controls being 'manned'. Latvian juniors did very well at the event.
The four-strong NOC contingent were:
Helen Palmer 19th/34 W16 Emily Talbot 24th/34 W16 Stephen Wright 29th/36 M15 Tim Blaney 29th/33 M14
The 'Friendship Relay' next day was on the streets around the hotels, and was much much closer
Only two first places: David Hodkinson M14, and the M48- relay team of Colin Olivant/Thomas Billam/David Hodkinson.
Sunday 28 June 3rd round cup match at Kingswood (near High Wycombe). New orienteering area! Winners progress to the final in October. Coach booked to leave Nottingham at 8.30 a.m. Starts will be to 13.00.

More details from Janet Evans. Please phone to book seat on coach, small charge.
We overcame NOR 79-54 at Rowney Warren. Well done everyone.
Next round likely June 7th. If we win there, we are once more in the Finals!
Congratulations to David Hodkinson who was 3rd M14 at the 4 way International match in the Netherlands.
We overwhelmed LEI at Bentley Woods. Well done everyone.
Next (double) round is at Rowney Warren on April 5th. If we win there, we are once more in the Finals!
