There is now a club forum available at www.noc-uk.org/forum/index.php. There are public discussion forums (fora if you prefer), and private forums for registered members of the forum. NOC members should therefore register, and membership will be confirmed by the forum moderators before the private forums become available to you.

There is also a RSS feed available from the forum. The link can be found on the top right of the page. Club members will be provided with another link that includes a feed from the private pages too.
NOC had three teams competing in this year's Peter Palmer Junior Team Relays at Sutton Park. The top team finished in fourth position overall and second handicapped team just three minutes behind Octavian Droobers. The team comprised of Tim Martin, James Tayor, Sarah Claxton, Jenny Evans, Joy Hodkinson, Ben Lord, Matthew Green and Peter Hodkinson.

The other two NOC teams gained valuable experience, but more importantly enjoyed the social side that this event is famed for.    Results are here
There will be a Scout and Guides Orienteering Competition alongside the district event at Walesby on 17th December. Entries must be submitted by 1st December.

  • Helen Palmer was representing GB for the third time at the World University Orienteering Championships in Košice, Slovak Republic and ran the second leg for the Women's team which gained the Gold Medal, pictured here on the podium with team mates Helen Bridle, Rachael Elder and Mhairi Mackenzie

Congratulations to Alison O'Neil who has been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Orienteering Championships in Denmark at Long Distance and in the Relay.
The final place NOC finished was 359. There was a mass start at 9am for over 1000 teams on last leg, around 600 on 6th leg runners and a few 5th legs. So some finishing after me did finish ahead.

Andy's leg also wasn't 7.7km - it was a beastly 12.9km! He had a flyer though.

Richard
NOC finished a respectable 331st at the Jukola Relay in Finland. To put this in perspective: there were 1320 teams competing!

Team members were Peter Forester, Mick Lucking, Andrew Llewellyn, Peter Hodkinson, Rob Palmer, Andrew Powell and Richard Robinson. Team Leg Details Results

Amazingly AndrewL overtook 340 other teams during his leg of 7.7 km to take the team from 941st to 601st. That means he must have overtaken someone every 22.6m!!!
NOC regains the Junior Harvester Trophy with ease: After 5hrs and 3 minutes of racing from sunset through the night, the NOC team of Peter Bowen, Timothy Martin, Katie Taylor, Peter Hodkinson and James Taylor finished 23 minutes clear of HOC.  Winners

If you haven't ordered one and would like one then please again get in contact with me. The price is £28.50 for tops and £15 for trousers.

A seven strong NOC team comprising of Peter Forester, Peter Hodkinson, Rob Palmer, Mick Lucking, Andrew Powell, Andrew Llewellyn and Richard Robinson will be heading out to Finland on 16 June to take part in the world's largest orienteering relay, the Jukola, held in the South West area of Finland near the town of Salo where almost 15,000 competitors are expected to compete and many more expected to spectate.

The Jukola relay is a seven man relay similar in format to the UK Harvester with course lengths between 7.8-14.4km. The relay starts at 23:00 on Saturday 17 June, shortly after the sun set at 22:49 and althought the sun is not expected to appear again until 03:44, twilight hours mean that there will only be complete darkness for less than an hour. With around 1200 men all starting in a mass start the sight of them all trying to even make it into the forest should be something to behold.

Prior to the Jukola Relay the Venla relay, the womens version of Jukola starts at 14:30 with teams comprised of four runners with leg lengths between 4.2-7.9km. With the majority of the teams from Finland and Scandinavia the race should be very spectator friendly. More information on this fantastic event can be found at www.jukola2006.net. If this trip proves successful and the interest is there this trip could be done on a regular basis as this is a competition all orienteering fanatics should taste.
Today at the ISF World Schools Orienteering Championships, at Grinava, Slovakia, Peter Hodkinson came 3rd in the H2 Select Classic race.
Well done to the following NOC members who finished in the top three of their respective classes:

1st Jenny Evans (W14A); Elizabeth Parkinson (W14B); Hilary Palmer (W55L); Peter Bowen (M20S); Andy Sykes (M40S); Bob Alderson (M65S).
3rd Sian Roberts (W20L); Mark Burley (M20S).

In addition, the team of Matthew Wallace, Tim Martin and Peter Hodkinson finished 3rd in the M48- class at the JK Relays. Congratulations to all!
Training will now alternate between circuits training one week, training run the next. Circuits are adaptable for everyone, club members taking part range at present from 8 years old to W55s. Each session is led by our own club member Eddie Nicholson.

The training run is suitable for all. Runs from 2-10K. Terrain is hills or flat park or woodland, it is up to you.

Start 6.30pm, Bramcote Hills Sports College, Moor Lane. Meet Gym for circuits, PE Classroom for run. Cost adults £1.00 per week, juniors 50p

Feel you can't keep up with others? If you prefer you can start without the pressure of others or you can run with Club members. Maps will be available of the park with suggested training runs. You don't have to run it all to start, just come along and build up the training at your own pace.

Chat afterwards. Bring along a recent map to discuss with club members.

Thanks to everyone who turned out for NOC yesterday, it was close but we did enough to get through. Nearly everyone that went either scored or knocked points off of other clubs.

The Final is on at Greenham Common nr Newbury on Sunday 15th October 2006 and is being hosted by BAOC. We can win this competition but we'll need everyone to run, I'm giving you advanced notice so people don't go booking holidays; we will need you.

As normal we will take a coach down again and hopefully we can fill it. The event is around a 3 hour drive from Nott'm so we could book some accommodation and travel down the day before and do some training on the Saturday as a club. But we could only do this with enough interest. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in as accommodation would have to be sought quite promptly. eMail Richard

The Evans family are organising a NOC run-in competition for day 1 of the JK. There will be 8 categories:
W and M 16- W and M 18-40 W and M 45-60 W and M 60+
We will have a list of everyone's name on a clipboard in the tent or by the banner, and would ask people to write their (honest) time next to their name.

There would be prizes for the winners of each category and also the slowest overall time.
For those who didn't collect their maps for either day of the British Championships weekend you will be able to collect them from Richard Robinson at the Compass Sport Cup match on Sunday (go to the club tent) or at club training on Thursday evenings.
LEI have been invited to host the Midland Night Championships at Grace Dieu on 11th November 2006. In accordance with BOF rules Orienteers are advised that the area is now embargoed to those who wish to compete in the 11th November event. This includes the LEI Summer League event in April and any training runs through the area.

Due to lack of uptake we have had to the cancel the coach to the regional round of the Compass Sport Cup in Thetford. There were too few wanting to use it to make it financially viable. NOC subsidises the coach to help those that aren't able to drive themselves down, but with less than 20 wanting to use it, it was felt too much to lose so much money. Instead we will be all travelling down by Car. Richard Robinson, Team Captain

So far I have only received 24 entries for this with the deadline long gone and only 10 indicating that they will be going on the bus. This will almost certainly see NOC lose in the regional round of this competition but will also see NOC lose a lot of money from the coach hire. There is still time to get you entry to me so please help out the club.
Thanks, Richard
Due to loss of parking field and forecast heavy snow the Organiser, Planner and Controller have agreed that the event should be cancelled. We are hoping to re-schedule the event for a Saturday in May. Neil Forrest DVO

Just a reminder that volunteers are still needed to staff the Orienteering stand at the NEC Outdoor Show. Please contact BOF if you able able to help. Link no longer available.
Support the British Squad by taking part in the Fantasy UK Cup. The British Orienteering Squad support fund offers small grants to athletes with World Class potential who come up with their own plan for self-organised training camps. To maintain the ability to help our athletes, the support fund is running the Fantasy UK Cup.

What is the Fantasy UK Cup? Fantasy UK Cup is an orienteering game in a similar vein to games run in newspapers such as Fantasy Football. You choose a team of 10 orienteers then sit back and let them rack up points for you. At any point during the game you can make transfers if your team isn't performing as well as you would like, and at the end of the season, the team with the most points wins.

Here are the Link no longer availablefull details.
DVO are looking to fill the accommodation they have booked:
DVO have booked a hall which provide floorspace for the British Champs. Sat. 1st April Duncton Village Hall - according to Barrie Pearson SO, cream of the cream of halls good cooking / toilets / washing facilities. Cost each person depends on numbers but we need to make £175 for the one night. Names to Val Johnson ASAP
I sure you have all heard of this competition but are put off by night Orienteering or having your body clock messed up by getting up at silly hours. Well this year's Harvester looks like being different.

The Harvester is amongst three events that look to be a quality w/e of Orienteering. On the saturday there will be a sprint race that is also part of the UK Cup series and is followed by the Harvester Relays that will start before Midnight so that they finish at a reasonable hour. This will give you enough sleep before the SOL5 regional event on the same area on the sunday. Many of the legs will be in the light at this time of year so don't worry too much if your not a fan of night orienteering.

For those of you interested in the Football, England's opening game against Trinadad and Tobago is on the Saturday, I've mentioned this to one of the organisers so hopefully a TV will be provided, failing that we'll find a pub. :)

Once I have got names of those interested (even if you'd like to do the Saturday and Sunday races and not run the Harvester), I can sort out travel arrangements. Richard Robinson, Team Captain
As per the entry below (31st Jan), please remember to enter the various Club Competitions via the team captain before 7th March.
Just a polite reminder to you all that it's the East Midlands Championships on the 5th March at Stapleford Woods. Entries close on the 18th Feb (this coming Saturday) so please get your entries in.

Due to the late arrival of the samples the deadline for orders has been extended by a week till the 19th February 2006. Samples will be available to try on at club training at Bramcote school on Thursday. For those of you that are unable to try on the club kit the measurements are
Size Top Trousers Leg Waist XXL 44" 35" 34" XL 42" 34" 33" L 40" 33" 32" M 38" 32" 30" S 36" 30" 29" XS 34" 29" 28" XXS 32" 28" 27" XXXS 29" 27" 23" XXXXS n/a 26" 19"
The kit is designed to be tight fitting against the skin to wick away sweat. If you would like a looser fit I would suggest a size or two larger than your normal size. The order form can be found here. If you have any queries or questions regarding the new kit you can contact me by email.
Okay before you all run away screaming it's not as arduous as you think....

I need a willing assistant to give me a hand in sorting out a few minor problems in New Park Wood ( older members may remember it to the East and joining to Rufford Park)

Nearly all of the wood is now runnable but there are several point features I just cannot fix without someone to assist with the triangulation. All you need to do is to hold a pole to and act as a visual target for the rangefinder so I can pinpoint the features accurately rather than just approximating them.

Mapping advice will of course be freely given if you are interested (just try shutting me up!) probably followed by a slap up nosh at "The Limes" Cafe

To take place hopefully on a forthcoming Saturday

Any takers email me and we can discuss.    Cheers Keith Streb
NOC are currently looking at the possibly taking a team to the Jukola/Venla Relays in Finland. Jukola Relay is the biggest sporting event in Finland. It will bring almost 15,000 competitors and even more spectators to the area. The estimated attendance is about 30,000 people. Jukola Relay is also one of the most well-known sporting events in the country and it attracts people from all around Finland. More information about this fantastic competition can be found here. If you are interested in taking part then please email Richard Robinson.
Club Coaching Day is held in the Lake District at Bishops Wood (used for JK 2004 Relays and JOK Sprint 2000 and 2006)
Combine this with the regional event on Sunday 23rd April on Graythwaite (JK 2004)
Cost: £5 adults; £2 juniors
No accommodation provided (East Midalnds Junior Squad will be staying at Hawkshead Youth Hostel which may still have space)
Stay up north for the week following the JK in Yorkshire and finish the week with some quality Lake District Terrain!
Applications need to be in by end of March so let me know by March 20th if interested Andrew Powell.
(Controls will have been put out of technical difficulty 3 to 5, maps will be supplied, control descriptions and master maps available, so it will be like having a permanent course for the day. You can do your own thing or follow some of my suggested exercises to test particular skills)

Orders should be placed now to ensure delivery before the major competitions this year. Order now to not only look good as an individual but to also help raise the profile of the club ..... full information.
