Injured old wreck of a planner is looking for volunteers to assist in collecting the controls after the Clumber event. The 22nd of Dec is the Winter Solstice which as I am sure you know makes it the shortest day. So the next day you can all feel righteous knowing how much less painful you have made my Xmas, whilst recovering in bed for that extra second or two. Any victims sorry volunteers ( and you know you will be valued and not verbally abused.... ) can contact me on Link no longer available
Thank you Keith Streb
DVO have an event on New Year's Day at Shipley Park SK432454, Score and Orange courses. Mass Start 11am.
The AGM 2002 Agenda and AGM 2001 Minutes are available.
I am sending this e-mail from the "World Masters Games E-mail centre" in Bendigo under the town hall.

Today was the first qualifying race at Glenluce South which is a magnificent area full of re-entrants spurs and gullies with the eucalyptus trees well spaced and mostly dry bare soil or rock on the ground. The spurs were not quite as big as at Hawksmoor but big enough to be taken seriously. Angela saw a kangaroo while she was running round and a Wallaby bounced past the final control during the early part of the race. When we left Hilary Palmer was winning her class. We expect things to be different at the final as we suspect some of the runners are saving themselves. We have seen an old copy of the map for the final and it looks quite frightening. Lots of detailed rock features and slow run on a big hill with big crags.

We went to the World Masters Games Opening Ceremony at the MCG and there must have been at least 20,000 of the public there as well as most of the 26,000 competitors. It was awesome!

The orienteering opening ceremony was also very good in Bendigo with a children's circus, Chinese Dragons, Scottish Pipe Band, Didgeridoo, and a display from the local volunteer fire brigade.

Mick and Angela (Roving Reporters).
An appeal from Keith Streb:
Is there anyone in NOC who has entered the 3 Hr score MTB event on the Sunday and if anyone fancies doing it as a pair? Link no longer available.
An appeal from Greville Seddon:
I have lost my partner for a (relatively non-competitive) entry in this years Saunders (6/7 July). I am a novice at this 2 day mountain marathon, and have entered in the lowest running class. If anyone wants to have go, please contact me before 20:00 on Sunday 30 June. Link no longer available
Having been round five venues, at last we have secured a venue to host the Peter Palmer Relays - err - in Leicestershire! Many more details will follow.
NOC won the footpath relay by being the best organised, the best balanced, and by being fastest. Mick Lucking balanced the teams perfectly, got everybody to the right place within time - and nobody made any mistakes.
The two teams finished in 5h14m08s and 5h11m21s one running the course clockwise, and the other anti-clockwise. The whole team time was taken when both teams had completed.

For new members this is a three day orienteering event which is held every year on the North Yorks Moors. It is the end of the summer and we always book part of a very pleasant campsite a few miles west of Pickering (Wayside Caravan Park at Wrelton) - there is space for cricket (seniors v juniors match on the Sunday evening before it gets dark) and we have a communal BBQ on the Saturday evening.

The campsite will reserve space for up to 10-12 units (cost between £11.50 for caravan + awning, £8.50 trailer tent for 2, £8 for tent for 2, one person tent £5.50) and each unit must book and pay for a minimum of 3 nights. It's a well maintained site with excellent washing / showering etc facilities all included in the price. We are trusted to pay on arrival but I will make the group booking.

Please let me know names, whether caravan, tent etc (+ electric hook-up?) and roughly what size. I also need date of arrival and leaving.

For the orienteering:
• make your own Badge event entries
• relays on the Monday. I need names, age class and money!! £4 each cheques payable to "H J Palmer" - no money no run!! Final closing date for relay entries: to me by 30 June

NOC Ladies came 2nd at the Scottish relays!! Good runs by all three, Liz came back 2nd on first leg, Helen caught up time on Lorna Eades on the 2nd leg and Alison held on well (on a long leg) to the team's 2nd place which puts them 2nd in the UK relay league now - behind Interlopers.

Worth the 1000 mile drive!! The vets/ old dears managed 8th - pretty good in the circumstances of a very physical forest and a total age of 185 on 165+

We wondered if it was all going to be a disaster with Helen suffering a tummy bug on Fri / Sat on the journey and didn't have much energy so she ran the short leg and Alison bravely did the last, long leg - a glory leg for the team!!

The chauffeurs survived and managed decent runs Sat and Sunday so that was a bonus!

Permissions for a large slice of the area BKO were using for the Compass Sport Cup Final were suddenly withdrawn, and BKO can no longer host the event on 12th May.

Fixtures committee is attempting to find another area/host for the Autumn.

* B courses have a pro-rata Gold time calculated. There is no actual Gold standard for B courses.
Just a reminder that training on Thursdays is now from the Olivants in Carlton.
Mick has produced a form for the Footpath Relay. Please complete and return ASAP.
The Footpath relay will be based in Ashbourne. 20 legs totalling 125km.
WCH have decided to compress the total elapsed duration of the event by using a the MDOC format from 15 years ago. Each club splits their forces into TWO halves, both starting at the same time, who each run the 62.5km route - but in opposite directions. There are no mini-mass starts because each loop is only 10 legs long. The 2nd half-team back counts - so the halves have to be evenly balanced.
Usual mixture of ages and sexes is needed to make a competitive team, and you can run more than one leg if you want. (Interesting possibilities around legs 5 and 6 for turning round and running back, perhaps less risky for legs 4 and 7?)

Names to Mick Lucking ASAP please.
The Final will be on the original date of 12th May 2002 at Blackwood near Basingstoke, organised by BKO.
Mick is already working out the logistics of getting us all there.
Get the date in your diary now!

Names to Mick Lucking ASAP please.

Karen and Rob are happy to announce the birth of their first child, a daughter, Anna, 6lb 10oz on Wednesday 27th February. Mother and daughter are both well.
HALO have asked us to point out that there is a Colour Coded event at Pillar Woods, TA127033, using electronic punching on Easter Sunday. HALO web site.
The WCH web site is carrying the provisional results, but no Badge times. When they appear, I shall be able to calculate the NOC Club Champs result. Ray
Just to confirm that the LOG EMOA gallopen event in Twyford on April 28th is si-punching, not conventional punching as advertised in EMEWS recently. Flyers will be going out and the BOF web page has been changed, but we confirmed it too late to get on previous BOF mailings. I'd be grateful if you could make your club members aware through your newsletters. We are also continuing with our experimental 'purple' course for road runners, long but technically easy. Thanks. John Bennett
NOC is now a well-known club in Berlin - or so it appears.
Translation
During the change to a new ISP there was a period of about 48 hours when the site apparently disappeared. We were unable to have any influence to shorten this, it was not expected to be more than an hour - but it seems to have been resolved OK now.
Due to the Foot and Mouth situation, there were no club champs in 2001. However the committee felt it right to recognise the devotion and promise shown by Mark Burley, and have presented him with the 'Best Newcomer 2001' award. Mark Burley
