New Orienteering Website
There is a new independent website about our sport. It has only just been launched and may appear to have a slight leaning towards Scottish and Junior affairs, but this is maybe more to do with the originators - graduates based in Edinburgh. Anyway, it's worth a look - nopesport.com

Sorry about the delay in announcing the results. The event was very poorly attended, and this has introduced some difficulties into the calculations. We are considering how best to proceed.

Yvette Baker Trophy Final (7th Dec)
Yvette Baker Trophy Final (7th Dec)
Calling all NOC juniors - Yvette Baker Trophy (Junior Interclub) National Final, 7th Dec High Ash, Thetford
We have again reached the final and now have to pre-enter the team.
The club is hiring a coach to take juniors to the event and the club has kindly agreed to subsidise the cost. The fare is £1.50 plus £3.50 entry fee. We will need some adults to help supervise and there is a green course available for traveling adults, (also pre entry).
We will meet at West Bridgford Library Car Park, and leave at 7.15am on the Sunday morning. Return approx 4.00-5.00pm
The final will be hotly contested. There are courses from yellow to green. The scoring system is such that the more runners we get there, the more points we can deny the opposition, so everyone's score helps the team. Boys and girls score separately. Please try to attend.
If you are able to come, please contact Pauline Olivant eMail IMMEDIATELY with the following details.

Technique Training Sessions
Helen Palmer and David Hodkinson are trying to set up an informal training group to do some technique training sessions through the winter. We are having a session this Wednesday evening at Bramcote, meeting in the car park by the playground at 17:45. We will set up an email list for future sessions. Very informal and hopefully we'll take it in turns to put on sessions, obviously these will become night orienteering sessions in a few weeks. Contact Helen and David by eMail

Footpath Relay (21st Jun)
NOC came second in the 2003 footpath relay which took place on 21st June on the footpaths around Castleton in Derbyshire. The winners were Holme Pierrepoint Running Club, Hallamshire Athletic Club were third and Derwent Valley O Club were fourth. In total eleven teams took part and NOC maintained its record of being the leading orienteering club in this race.
We are organising next year's race on 19th June from the southern end of Chatsworth. It will have more path running and less road running. Make a note to put it in next year's diary!
Holme Pierrepoint A 7:41:23 Hallamshire A 7:51:12* NOC 8:02:56 DVO 8:19:21 Hallamshire B 8:21:34 Walton Chasers 8:23:56 Sandhurst Joggers 8:30:31 Ashbourne R C 8:40:42 Southwold 8:53:32 Holme Pierrepoint B 9:19:15 MDOC missing one runner
*Hallamshire A did not dib at one of the special extra controls and therefore a 20 minute penalty was added to their time and we came officially second.
Our splits were as follows:

158 boys and girls represented their districts at the County Orienteering Final at Titchfield Park, Hucknall on Sat 14th June. The City map-readers won the 'A' course and the Bassetlaw 'B' team also triumphed when the fast runners from other districts did not slow down to read their maps and check their control codes. The Broxtowe A and B teams both collected medals - an excellent result following on from the A4A Lottery - funded work in that area. Full Results

Harvester Trophy 2003 (15th June)
Harvester Trophy 2003 (15th June)
NOC teams only narrowly missed out on two prizes in the Harvester Trophy competition at Longshaw last weekend.
For much of the race our women's team was the leading women's team and our men's team were leading the competition for the Sutton Park Trophy. This is the trophy for the best team that has not been in the top three in the last 5 years.
In the end the women's team came second 9 minutes behind the winners, Sheffield University and the men came 7th 19 minutes behind the winners of the Sutton Park Trophy.
NOC also fielded a second team in the 5 person relay which finished in 15th place out of 27 teams.
The courses were quite tough, particularly in the last kilometre where they dropped down a steep, bracken covered slope.
In the women's race NOC were always in contention but unfortunately Helen Palmer's headlight went out part way round her course which made navigation round the last section particularly difficult with only a hand torch.
Andy Sykes in the A team also had serious trouble with his headlamp and had to rely on his torch for the latter stages of the race.
Michael Napier had a busy weekend as he provided computing facilities for the Notts. Youth Games on Saturday afternoon and also at the Harvester Trophy throughout a midge infested Saturday night. He also ran the first leg for the NOC men's team. The Harvester Trophy was one of the first events to have automatic results being reported to the finish from both a spectator control and the last control and the system ran smoothly throughout the night.

Compass Sport Cup Winners Finally
Compass Sport Cup Winners Finally
Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club is back as the top club of British Orienteering. After a gap of 12 years the club have regained the national club championship for the Compass Sport Cup at the finals at Shouldham Warren near Kings Lynn.
The club had winning margin of over 15 points from teams from Leeds, Oxford, Sussex, Cumbria and last year's winners Bristol. The competition covers all age classes and is a test of strength in depth. A good showing from the juniors was to be expected as the club have had the strongest junior section in the country for some years. Andrew Llewellyn and Alison O'Neil ran particularly strongly over the rough terrain with progress slowed by recent rapid bracken growth.
It was in the elite women's class that the club particularly excelled. England International Liz Day from Nottingham University and Helen Palmer from West Bridgford and a member of the British Development Squad took first and second places by a clear 4 minutes over their 6 kilometre course. There was also a strong performance from Richard Robinson from Sutton-in Ashfield in the elite men's class backed up by Simon Elliott from Beeston who took time out from road racing to finish with a high placing.
Among the older age groups Bob Alderson was in second place over 5km for the over 60 men and Michael Napier from Wollaton overcame a back injury to achieve second place in the over 45 category.
Team Manager Mick Lucking was delighted with the win. "We have reached the final in each of the last seven years. Finally to win is the result of the club's junior development programme and shows that we are becoming the leading British Orienteering club."
