A small (but elite) group of juniors certainly seemed to enjoy their day at the Yvette Baker Trophy final. The final was held at Tilgate Park, Crawley, Sussex.

Apparently it was very muddy!

Octavian Droobers took the title, with Deeside the runners up and South Yorkshire finishing third.

Full results can be found here

Thanks to Mick and Julie Lord for being the responsible adults on the day and to Pauline Olivant for organising and the administration.

And of course to all the juniors who took part on the day and those who helped qualify for the final.

Next year’s event will be closer to home, should NOC qualify it will be in the West Midlands.

Congratulations to Samuel Horsewill on his appointment as Junior Team Captain (This also means that the committee now has a full compliment of members)
A big thanks to Lindsey Brown for taking on the team leader role for the string course.

Also many thanks to Hilary Hodkinson for all those years of sterling service.

Hilary’s great article from B & G (September 2008)

I’m All Strung Up!

Our family first got involved with running String courses for NOC sometime back in the mid-nineties – in those far-off days before every detail was recorded on the computer! –and I’ve held the job of String Course Team Leader ever since. But I now need to pass the role on to another Club member.

When we first started organising string courses, they were very elaborate affairs. We had to visit the area in advance and hand-draw a pictorial map upon which the course was drawn. I remember photocopying 30 or 40 per event – and even then fearing that they might run out. (But those were the days when M14 had 100 competitors at the JK or British Champs!)

Times have changed and the number of young children at events has dropped significantly. We have worked out a way of running string courses that is much less demanding of time or petrol. There is no need to visit the area in advance or to produce a map. You simply affix a large picture to each control stake (obtainable from the club garage) and print out a number of ‘control cards’ (comprising a strip of paper with miniature copies of the pictures next to numbered boxes where the children punch.) We have several pre-prepared sets of String Course pictures + ‘control cards’, which only need to be printed off the computer. On the day, you just roll out the string within the allocated area, choosing the course to suit the day’s conditions, and put out the control stakes at appropriate points on the course. Instead of a map, each child is given their ‘control card’ and simply follows the string.

Although there are now fewer children, the enjoyment and educational benefit they gain from doing the String Course remains the same. I know how important it was for our family to have something for everyone at an orienteering event and can honestly say that, without the initial experience of the String Course, our children’s passion for O would have been slower to develop.

A particular highlight for us was running the String Course at the JK in the Lake District in 2004. For such a special occasion we had drawn a detailed map; but, on the morning of the event we were forced to move to an entirely new location and to construct an entirely new course, with no opportunity to correct the maps. Only one family out of the hundred or so who took part commented upon the obvious inaccuracies – thus confirming my observation that children are more interested in the string, the pictures, the punching (and the sweet at the end!) than in the finer points of a map

Times have now moved on and the role of String Course Team Leader no longer fits our family life. Our youngest child is dedicating her life to music and ballet and we now spend many weekends at master classes and competitions and almost every weekday evening at ballet school the other side of Nottingham. This makes it very difficult to carry out the only essential part of the Team Leader’s job – phoning or emailing round to arrange volunteers to run the string courses at the next few club events. There is no obligation to run the courses yourself since we have a team of helpers, many of whom are well experienced. Above all, and contrary to popular belief, there is no need to have any children of your own at all – a sense of satisfaction when seeing children enjoying themselves in a constructive way is the only requirement!

So I do hope that someone in the Club will feel able to take on this less-thanonerous task and do their bit to keep up the supply of families coming into our sport. Please email me on teamleader_string@noc-uk.org to arrange a chat.

Our Yvette Baker trophy qualifying heat is on Sunday 8th November at Wakerley Woods (full details will be available on the LEI web site, www.leioc.org.uk )

For those who haven’t taken part before this is national junior competition of the year and NOC juniors have always done well, but last year DVO beat us so we want to have as many juniors are possible at the heat to help us qualify for the final this year. All juniors score and the top 9 count for the team. but even if you don’t count for the team you may still push other scores for LEI, DVO down.

The format is fairly straight forward, any M/W20 or below can run, courses yellow to green are used for scoring, boys and girls are scored separately, you can run very much the course that you think you can score well on, but with a few small restrictions.

Yellow is restricted to M/W14 and below, as long as they haven’t got gold standards at level 1 events or above on JMW 3 courses .

Orange Any M/W 12 or below, plus any 14 and above who hasn’t got gold at JMW4 or higher.

Light green any M/W 14 and M/W16 or above, but again as long as they haven’t got gold standards on JMW5 courses.

Green Anyone.

A list of those holding gold standards has been published by British Orienteering if you are not sure. http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/downloads/eventinfo.php

If you finished in the top ten at the final last year this also may affect the course you can run.

We really need as many juniors as possible, a lot of our obvious ‘stars’ can now only run green, we can only score 4 on that course whilst we hope they will take max points between them, we really need a lot more juniors to take part particularly on yellow, orange and light green, can you please let me know if you will be able to run and check out if not sure which course you should compete on.

Please come and run for the club and help us qualify for the final again Crawley on the 6th December.

Regards

Pauline

Team manager Simon Elliott would like to pass on this message regarding the Compass Sport Cup.

The NOC entry was pretty thin this year so many thanks to those who made it off their sick beds and physio couches to compete.

Even I enjoyed what was a pretty runable LEI forest, probably due to the fact that it is in Northamptonshire!

I hope to get to the Byron's Walk event in a couple of weeks and will bring the maps for those who didn't collect on the day.

Remaining refunds will also be available.

I'm off to Hong Kong this weekend for an interesting sounding Team Score Event - looks very hilly!

Cheers

Simon

Since the formation of the current committee, we have been unable to fill the position of Volunteer Coordinator. This is a challenging role in the club but is also crucial to our continued development and success. Time given by volunteers is our greatest resource and without effective coordination, we are in danger of failing to capitalise on the commitment and good will of our membership.

As an interim measure, other committee members have attempted to fill in but this is a far from ideal solution and is unfair to ask committee members, who are themselves volunteers, to take on additional responsibilities.

As the club develops, the position of Volunteer Coordinator will become even more crucial and the Committee have decided to adopt the following approach to deal with this challenge.

To deal with our immediate challenges, the position of Volunteer Coordinator is advertised here, to the membership, with responsibilities as per the current Roles and Responsibilities (set out below) and with a limited tenure to 31st December 2009.

Recognising the particular challenges of the role, a fee of £750 will be paid in return for the achievement of an agreed set of outcomes (which will basically revolve around the provision of volunteers for the 2009/10 fixtures).

During that time, the committee will work to develop a bid for grant funding to create a larger post aimed at developing the Volunteer Coordinator role and the utilisation of volunteers within the club. It is hoped that this post can commence in January 2010 and will last for around one year. As this bid develops, updates on it’s progress will be given.

Anyone wishing to be considered for the role should contact the Club Chairman by 15th September 2009.

Anyone considering putting themselves forward is welcome to contact Steve Green or Pauline Olivant for an informal chat.

Roles and Responsibilities
· Attend all NOC Fixtures sub committee meetings and any NOC committee meetings if necessary.
· Email/post all actions relating to the role, 2 weeks before the NOC Committee meeting
· Find volunteers for each event for the roles of planner, organiser, controller and whiz kid.
· Liaise with the fixtures sub committee about planned fixtures and permissions, keep them updated about event officials appointed including updating web site system.
· Circulate to event officials any guidance on file e.g. organiser's notes (which include contact details for helper group co-ordinators, results service), planner's notes, summer league organisation notes.
· Ensure that they have received all the relevant information they need from the club to enable them to carry out the role.

The time that is achieved by at least 50% of those who started the course, which includes those who retire or are disqualified. Each pair or group on Yellow and Orange courses (if any) should be treated as a single starter.

or

150% of the winner’s time.

Sunday saw another fantastic summer league event, for those who ran too fast and missed seeing The Hemloch Stone, try http://www.stapleford-notts.co.uk/hemlockstone.htm for some further information.

Andy Wallace wins “timekeeper” of the day, with no watch he still managed to keep under the 40 minute barrier with a very accurate run of 39:33

Simon’s comments………

A glorious day with a huge turnout - many thanks to those runners on the technical course who were patient in waiting for a recycled map (very 'green'!).

With such a small area it's difficult to get courses of suitable length using pin punching however I hope the pathless Hemlockstone slowed you down a little if the hills hadn't already.

We had one control kite and one punch stake pinched (at different control sites), fortunately after everyone had finished so no ones run was affected.

Thanks to Catherine Hughes for doing the 'Meet and Greet'. Much appreciated I'm sure by the several newcomers.

Thanks to Joe Elliott for planning the orange course and Max for running round it to ensure it met the required standard.

And finally to Christine / Max and Joe for helping on registration / start and finish

Simon Elliott

Congratulations to Helen on being selected to represent British Orienteering at the Open Nordic Orienteering Championships (including World Cup Events 1 & 2) in Finland and at the O-Festivalen World Cups (Events 3 & 4) in Norway.
Saturday's event involved a huge amount of club members, many forgoing their chance to run in order to take part in the organisation of the day.

The committee would like to thank everyone who turned out and helped, hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves and it turned out to be another great advert for “Team NOC”.

Judging by some of the comments on Nopesport, the whole weekend was judged to be a fantastic success by the orienteering community.

“An excellent day out - thanks to all involved. I think watching the A-finals has to be the best orienteering ‘spectator experience’ I've had in the UK”

“An outstanding weekend of orienteering. Slick organisation, some superb courses, and some great spectating on Saturday. Loved every second of it!”
Girl Power! Today’s event in Leicestershire produced some great results for NOC. Charlotte Webster (W10) and Hilary Palmer (W60) both took the top spot, with Victoria Littlewood claiming third in the W14.

Jack Lord was second on M12 and Ruedi Billeter was also second on M55.

The event rounded off a fantastic weekend of orienteering in the East Midlands.
Results are now in for all the races, a super day was enjoyed by all at a sunny Nottingham University.

The top three places went to

Women
1 Sarah Rollins
2 Pippa Whitehouse
3 Helen Bridle

Men
1 Scott Fraser
2 Graham Gristwood
3 Matthew Speake

NOC are hoping to enter at least two teams for this event.

The venue is Merthyr Common, Merthyr Tydfill, South Wales. Why not make it a weekend with a Saturday afternoon(20th) race on Clydach Terrace?

Richard Robinson is interested in taking an 'A' team and as you may have seen on the forum, Keith Streb is interested in a 'B' team.

If orienteers feel they would like a run in either team could they contact Richard and Keith either directly or through me ( Simon Elliott ) and if there is appropriate interest I will enter teams.

For those not familiar with the Harvester relays, it is a 7 leg relay starting at night, finishing during daylight hours.

Initial details on the Swansea OC site http://www.swoc.org.uk/
Did you know that NOC members are able to claim a certificate of achievement for colour coded courses?

A competitor qualifies for a colour coded award by achieving the colour coded standard for that colour course on three separate occasions. Pairs can qualify for colour coded awards on the white, yellow and orange courses.

Further details will be in the next issue of the club newsletter (due very soon) including how to make a claim.
The closing date for online entries is today (Monday 27th April 2009)

The weekend comprises the British Elite Sprint Championships at Nottingham University Campus (organised by NOC) and the British Middle Distance Championships at Cademan, Thringstone and High Sharpley (organised by LEI) The middle distance championship will also be the NOC club championships.
The family fun day at Sherwood Pines was a great success for NOC. Three mini-courses were on offer as well as a string course. The latest technology was employed, SI punching with a print out of each run.

Every single person enjoyed their run, with many coming back for 2nd and 3rd runs. We were overwhelmed with the many positive comments and maybe the odd future champion has been introduced to the sport.

Thanks to Robert Parkinson (pictured just before the event started) for planning the course and taking the lead on this and thanks also to his posse of helpers Pauline, Catherine, Lindsey, Ruedi, Mark, Tom, Charlotte and Jordan.

All set for action

The first deadline for cheaper entries is today (15th April) for the British Age Class Middle Distance Championships on the 10th May 2009.

Any “local” members of NOC can still enter this event, LEI will accept your entries via the postal route should the online system not allow you to enter (the online system may be set up to only accept “national” members)

Remember to enter your own age class, no running up or down.

The first finisher from NOC in each age class will be crowned club champion for that particular age class. Mementoes will be presented to each winner; this will be done later in the year at a separate event.

Further details are available at http://www.leioc.org.uk/bmdc/index.html
Fantastic weather in the North East complemented a great four days of orienteering at this year’s JK.

Top spot was saved for the final day when the relay team of Julie Arnesen, Elizabeth Parkinson and Mali Kanstad took the Women’s short title.

The Claxton’s household will also be buzzing with a silver and bronze medal.

Other top three places are as follows

Day 1, Friday: Sprint in Newcastle

W10: 3rd Charlotte Webster

Day 2+3, Overall:

M18E: 3rd Peter Hodkinson

M18S: 2nd Peter Lynas

W18L: 3rd Fiona Claxton

W20L: 2nd Sarah Claxton

W60L: 2nd Hilary Palmer

Day 4: Relay

Special mention to Keith Streb who managed to finish both days(2+3) despite the minor inconvenience of a broken arm!
This year we will be having an age class based championship. The first finisher from NOC in each age class will be crowned club champion for that particular age class. Mementoes will be presented to each winner; this will be done later in the year at a separate event.

The first deadline for cheaper entries is fast approaching, in fact it’s the 15th April, so enter ASAP and save a £1

The nominated event is the LEI event at Thringstone and Cademan Woods(Sunday the 10th May) which just happens to be the British Middle distance championships. All you need to do is enter your normal age class. Information about the rest of the event can be found at http://www.leioc.org.uk/bmdc/index.html
NOC will be taking 17 teams to this year’s JK relays.

Simon Elliott the NOC team manager has even managed to find a team where everyone has the same name! Good luck to “Team Christine”: Christine Elliott, Julie Christine Webster and Christine Horsewill.

To all competing, have a great run.

The full list of relay entries is available at http://www.sportident.co.uk/entries/list.php?event_id=181
The training sessions on Thursdays at Bramcote will take a break for the Easter holidays, after this the evenings will be lighter and so training will probably revert back to runs rather than circuits.
NOC’s top performer was Jenny Evans who finished 4th in the W16 class, Jenny missed out on the top spot by just 37 seconds in a race which saw the top 10 separated by just 2 minutes!

The sprints were held at Stirling University (Saturday 4th April 2009) a fast modern campus with extensive grounds and woodland.
A quick note to remind everyone that due to the Easter break the next training night at West Notts College will be on Tuesday April 21st.
Our friends at Sherwood Pines are hosting a family fun day on Sunday the 26th April.

Some fantastic attractions are on the list, see http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-7pve9c for further details.

NOC will be present with Robert Parkinson taking the lead but we will need 3 or 4 others to help out. You don’t need to do the full day, a couple of hours here and there would be great help to Robert and would leave you plenty of time to try the other activities on offer.

This is a great opportunity to promote NOC and orienteering to the general public and hopefully we might generate a few new members.

If you can help and spare the time then please get in touch. E-mail via the secretary.
We are aware the Blue Men and Blue Women courses are swapped. It will be fixed later this evening. Please don't put up any courses on those two courses for the moment.
21:00 I believe it is now fixed. The problem was that the names of the courses used by the planners did not correspond to the names of the courses used by the results system.
Team NOC qualified for the final today at Sherwood Pines, a big thank you to all those who took part including all the helpers and those important people doing all the work behind the scenes. The cup holders SYO were victors on the day with NOC qualifying in second place.

The final will be hosted by LEI at Fineshade Woods on Sunday 18th October 2009. Hopefully the weather will be the same as today? So a date for your diary!

Would it be good for orienteers to meet up once a week to learn orienteering skills from coaches and talk about events with regular club orienteers?

Would you like to help out… and maybe improve your skills or fitness at the same time? Pauline Olivant and I (Catherine Hughes) have been working with local authorities and sports partnerships for over a year and we are very excited to announce the launch of the new venue, which will mean that orienteers living north of Nottingham will be able to meet up on a regular basis. However, we need your help!

Come And Try It events

We need volunteers to help us run the two events at Sutton Lawn on Saturday 14th and Berry Hill on Sunday 15th March. If you can help us putting out or taking in controls or supporting newcomers as they try orienteering for the first time, please email me with your preferred time of day between10.30 to 3.30pm. If you can only spare one hour – that will still be appreciated. There will be white, yellow and orange courses – and they’ re all FREE!

And, Hilary Palmer will be offering coaching to NOC members too!

Please pass on the details about these two events to your friends and colleagues who you think might be interested. Here’s a handy link to forward to friends:

New training venue @ West Notts college and nearby woodlands

Launch of new training venue takes place at West Notts College on Tuesday 17th March and will run every Tuesday evening, 6:30pm–8pm in term time. It would be great if local club members could join in this year to support new members. We’ll be organizing a mix of skills and physical training activities. So, there’s an opportunity to improve your own your fitness and skills too – perhaps come along just for a drink and a chat about your o-course at the weekend?

Please forward details about the venue to friends and colleagues. We are happy to supply posters, flyers or electronic copy for intranets etc.

Would you like to become a volunteer coach? Talk to Catherine about opportunities to train as a level 1 orienteering coach

If you have any questions, please contact the club coach Catherine Hughes on 07940 575758 or e-mail me at hubclub

Club captain Simon Elliott needs to enter the runners for the Compass Sport Cup Qualifier at Sherwood Pines. There is just over 1 week left to do this.

At the moment we're short of runners in a couple of the ages groups.

Simon has sent out an e-mail to all club members with a list of the runners and those who entered last time. If you know anyone who could run but isn't currently on the list perhaps you could encourage them to do so? If you didn’t get the e-mail then please contact Mark.

We're up against SYO, DVO, LEI.

However, even if SYO win as they are the current Cup holders, a second team will go through to the final and that should be NOC - providing people enter and run!

If you wish to run, please e-mail Simon:

Age group
BOF number
SI number
Early / Middle / Late start time preference.

Entry fees are £9.50 senior and £4.00 Juniors and Students

Apologies go out from the club to those runners affected by the erratic behaviour of a certain individual near the end of the event on Sunday. I’m sure the day was spoilt for those followed by the man on his quad bike who then started collecting in the controls! NOC would like to offer a refund to those whose run was affected.

The incident is being pursued by NOC with the landowner from whom full permission was in place for the event to take place, and from the Forestry Commission who lease the land from the Estate.

A big thank you also to the professionalism of the event officials and helpers who had to deal with this extraordinary occurrence.

An important date for your diary. The 2009 NOC club championships will be held on Sunday the 10th May. The nominated event will be the LEI event at Thringstone and Cademan Woods, which just happens to be the British Middle distance championships. All you need to do is enter your normal age class. Further details on the club championship format are to be issued later.

Information about the rest of the event can be found at BMDC
Our hosting company have informed us that on Wednesday 25th the web server hardware is being swapped/upgraded. They expect this to take 30 minutes, probably at 19:00. Whilst the transfer is taking place there will be no services available, including the Forum and Routegadget.
Good luck to the following NOC members who are representing England in the Interland Cup this weekend at Burnham Beeches, Hertfordshire.

M20 Peter Hodkinson
M50 Kevin Lomas
M50 Mike Napier

And have a good run to all those NOC members who are also travelling down for this event (there are quite a few looking at the start list)
NOC’s fixtures have three fantastic events coming up over the next month.

All are ideally suited for beginners, especially the “Come and Try It” weekend. These two fixtures on the weekend of the 14th/15th March are even FREE! If you know anybody in the north of the county who has expressed an interest in orienteering in the past then please let them know, don’t let them miss out!

Firstly a reminder that entries for the JK relays in Newcastle have to be completed by Feb 28th to take advantage of the cheaper prices!
JK Relays Entry Form

PLEASE LET ME HAVE YOUR ENTRY BY FEB 22ND SO I CAN SORT THE TEAMS READY FOR THE 28TH DEADLINE

We have very few complete teams at present!

Secondly the Compass Sport Cup Qualifier.

This is Sunday March 29th in Sherwood Pines - a home fixture for us so no excuses not to run!

Entry fees are £9.50 senior and £4.00 Juniors and Students

We need as big a NOC representation as possible in all age groups to ensure our qualification for the final.

Even if you're not necessarily going to win your class, being there will push someone from another club down the results list and fewer points for them!

If you can let me have your details:

Name
Age group
SI card number
BOF number
Early/Middle/Late start preference

together with a cheque payable to NOC

by 9th March please - this is event is more complicated than most for me as we are allocated start times and I have to fiddle around slotting people in!

Any queries don't hesitate to contact me ( E-mail Simon Elliott )

Many thanks

Simon Elliott

The East Midlands is planning to put on the new UK Coaching Certificate Level 1 Coaching Course during this year.

These courses are designed as the entry level to coaching and equip you to coach up to Orange standard skills for both adults and children in the club.

You don’t need to be an expert orienteer to attend the courses; Light Green standard is all that is needed. Full training will be given and NOC has several coaches who are willing to mentor anyone who is interested in learning more about coaching beginners, it is also an ideal way to find out more personally about the basic skills involved in the sport.

The training will be FREE to anyone who is then willing to do some volunteer coaching for the club.

Would you interested in finding out more?

New versions of the IOF Pictorial Control Descriptions have been loaded to the web. The only material change is to correct the timed crossing on Course 6 to be between controls 173 and 172. Other changes are the addition of course closing times and the substitution of the taped route symbol with a written explanation. Please download your course again. (The new versions were posted at 00:30 on Friday morning.)

Hilary Palmer will be holding a coaching session at Burnt Stump Country Park from 10.30 to 12.30 on Saturday 14th February.

The coaching is open to all but especially focusing on newer members of any age who want to improve their basic skills.

Hilary's intention is that younger children who usually do 'white' and 'yellow' courses would be able to do most of the activities on their own if they want to.

Juniors who hold the junior leaders award are invited to turn up to help, or just have a run.

Names and level to be advised by Feb 10th to give time to print the maps.

Please contact Jim Clarke with the details.
The next NOC committee meeting will take place on Wednesday 28th January 2009.

As you may know Pauline Jones has been overseeing the position of treasurer since the last A.G.M. Pauline is currently in handover talks with a new treasurer! Once again, a big THANK YOU to Pauline for bridging the gap and to the new volunteer (announcement soon). There are still a few other vacancies to fill, see the right hand side of the website's front page, if you are interested in any of the roles then please let the committee know.
Happy new year to orienteers everywhere.
