A reminder that it's the 2013 NOC club champs this Sunday (15th December) at SYO's event at Canklow Woods.

The event details state that there is now a short green course too (which was not previously advertised). I have therefore amended the class/course combinations that you need to run in order to be eligible for prizes (see attached flyer)

Prizes will be awarded for top 3 in junior age classes and 1st place in senior age classes. 1st place will receive a box of Lindor chocolates or Celebrations for Senior and Junior age classes respectively. 2nd and 3rd places in junior classes will receive a large bar of Cadbury's 'bubbly'. Prizes will be presented at the NOC event at Walesby the following weekend (22nd December).
In addition to the usual courses, there will be a head-to-head "Chase" course with handicapped mini mass starts for each age class, with the fastest off last and the winner being the first past the finish line. The Chase course will be c6.5km long and is broadly equivalent to a blue course. The first mini mass start will be at 11:00 for M70+/W55+ with the last start around 11:20 for M21. The exact start times for intermediate classes will be available on the day. It is hoped that the Chase will offer an informal but competitive way to spice up the annual Walesby event. See the forum if you wish to add your comments.

Great report from Robert Parkinson
2 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals at the British Championships. Six local schools made the long journey to Northumberland for the 2013 British Schools Score Orienteering Championships, that were held at Druridge Bay Country Park, near Amble. Each orienteer had 45 minutes to visit as many controls as possible. They were awarded 10 points for every control they visited but lost 5 points for every minute they took over their allotted 45.

As the afternoon progressed the results kept being updated as competitors finished. Eventually, we were able to celebrate a number of good results from Bassetlaw’s juniors. At the prize giving Sebastian Price and Angus McCallion, from Worksop College Prep School, who ran as a pair, were awarded the Gold medal for winning the Year 5 Boys race.

Individual bronze medals were also won by George Carley (Year 8 Boys - Elizabethan Academy), Elle Severn + Emma Robinson (Year 5 Girls - Bracken Lane Primary, Eleanor Cooley (Year 9 Girls - Worksop College).

In the school team competition Worksop College Prep School Boys won Gold in the Middle/Prep Section while their girls team also did well coming home in 2nd place. Tuxford Academy completed an excellent day when their Senior Boys won Bronze medals in the Boys Upper Secondary team section.

Meanwhile Jim Clarke had this to say
On Saturday 12th October 2013, members of the Nottingham High School Orienteering team made the long journey to Druridge Bay in Northumberland for the British Schools’ Score Championships. In a score event, the object is to navigate to as many controls as possible in the time allowed.

A challenging course was set with a number of controls on the sand dunes plus a route choice to challenge even the most experienced Orienteers, meaning that some were over ambitious in the controls they attempted.

The school team almost all ran well and achieved some good results. In the Lower Secondary School (Years 7-9) age class an incomplete team still managed to finish in 3rd place.

In the Upper secondary school age class the school team were narrowly beaten into 2nd place by a strong team from Torquay Grammar School.

Individually Matthew Sutton, Donald Flynn and Thomas Ward all finished in the top 10 of their age class. Sam Davis finished 5th in the Year 7 age class, while in the Year 12 and 13 age class, Nick Malbon was 4th. Our two individual medalists were also in the Year 12-13 class - James Mellor came 3rd and Jack Smith 2nd.
Peter Hodkinson is in the news again, the Elite Development Squad is focused on preparing athletes to deliver top 20 performances at the World Orienteering Championships in two to five years time. See further details here.
Well done to Peter on his selection for England's under 23 team (see here)

Details on the run are here and the results are here.
NOC members can now do a first aid course, free of charge! This offer is open to all members, you don't have to be a coach. A fantastic opportunity to pick up a new skill.

Places are limited so contact Mark Webster for further details.

Here are some courses coming up.......

Sport Nottinghamshire has a number of 3 hour evening first aid courses on offer at £15 e.g. 6th November at County Hall and another at West Notts. They seem to run them fairly frequently.

See: http://www.sportnottinghamshire.co.uk/training-and-development/

It looks to be a good course and will be of interest to everyone(not just coaches) and is available for anyone who takes part in sport and is resident in Nottinghamshire.

Note: coaches now have to decide for themselves what level of first aid they should have. This 3 hour course covers CPR, sprains, bleeding etc. and is specifically geared to sports coaches.

The latest copy of the NOC newsletter has arrived. Many thanks to Ben Beresford for creating this edition and to those who sent in their stories. If you didn't receive your e-mail last week with a copy of the B&G then we don't have an up to date e-mail for you. Please let David Sissons know your correct e-mail. Black and Green September 2013

The NOC juniors performed very well in the Yvette Baker Trophy Final, that was held in Belton Park, on Sunday (7th July).

They finished a very creditable 9th out of 13 teams, just 1 point behind 8th place. The clubs best performance for 3 years. Good performances were recorded across all age groups despite the head high grass, nettles and very hot temperatures.

NOC provided trophies to every junior who represented the club in this national final.

Many thanks also to their parents who took them to the event and to team captain Will Parkinson.

Maps from this event have been collected and will be available at future NOC events. We also have the maps for any NOC runner who competed before the Yvette Baker event. Please see Will to reclaim your map. Bassetlaw juniors can collect their maps at the training session in Thoresby, on Wednesday evening (10th July).
For all those juniors entered, have a great run and enjoy Belton Woods. Entry on the day is also available for the open courses (yellow to blue) if you fancy popping along and supporting the NOC Juniors. Further details are here.
On Sunday June 30th at the NOC Berry Hill Level D event I will be putting on some exercises for people to practise using the compass - aimed at people who are moving on from TD3 (Orange) to TD4/5 (Light Green/Green).

This will be available 9.30 - 10.30 and is for anyone who would like to practise before doing their 'run' - you will still be competitive; I will be using a small area of the park. No charge for the coaching.

It would be good to know in advance who may be coming along for map extract printing! Please let me know by midday Saturday.

Coaches are welcome too - to help or to see what I am doing!

Many thanks

Hilary Palmer

Thanks to Keith Streb for sending in this picture of the NOC team that won the Compass Sport Cup in the early 90's. "Thought this might make a interesting addition to the previous Compass Sport photo. It's the first time we won it back in the early 90's, up near Skiddaw if I remember correctly. Tim Hills ( centre : dark blue fleece) was chairman" The team photo.
The Yvette Baker Trophy final is at Belton, on Sunday 7th July. The YBT event is pre-enter only. Others can compete either before or after the YBT competitors. Details are available on the LOG website.

Can any junior wanting to compete please e-mail Robert Parkinson (e-mail here) so he can enter you. It is £5 to enter (you can pay Robert on the day) but our team needs to be declared before then.

There will also be a Run Challenge on the first Tuesday of the month in Beeston, starting at the car park for Broxtowe Council offices on Foster avenue. Next date 4th June.

Pre-book or just turn up on the night.Run it, Find it, Answer it!

A 45 minute recreational running activity combined with a fun question and answer challenge. Aimed at people who enjoy the outdoors – whether orienteering, running, jogging or walking. It’s a fun challenge to train your brain and body whilst exploring your local area.

All the participants start at the same time. Using a map with 20 check points drawn on, the aim is to locate as many of them as possible in 45 minutes and answer a question at every point. This could be a post box number or lamp post and each correctly answered question is worth 10 points.

No experience of map reading is necessary and Run Challenge is a perfect opportunity for individuals to compete and see their results via the Run Challenge website http://www.runchallenge.org.uk/

Register at 6pm, ready for mass start at 6:30pm. £3 to enter.
Well done to the juniors who have qualified for the Yvette Baker Trophy Final. It will be on 7th July, at Belton, near Grantham and hosted by LOG. It would be good to get as many as possible to this event.
Thank you to all the juniors who attended the LEI event on Saturday. There were some very encouraging performances, we had 18 participants competing against the juniors from OD and LEI.
The club would like to invite all NOC juniors to represent the club in the EM regional round of the Yvette Baker Trophy.

The event takes place on Saturday 18th May at LEI's Bradgate Park. More details can be found here. This is also an EM league event i.e. not just for juniors.

All NOC juniors are eligible to compete and we hope as many of you a possible will come and run for the club. There are courses from yellow to green, most juniors can run whichever course they normally take part on, with only some restrictions on age or if you are a high level orienteer. The scoring system is such that the more runners we get there, the more points we can deny the opposition, so everyone’s score helps the team. Boys and girls score separately. Please try to attend.

Coach Robert Parkinson will be on hand to help out and choose the right course for you(if required)

The new NOC top will also be available to buy, Mark Webster will have the stock on Saturday and if all goes to plan, then Hilary Palmer will also have a selection on Sunday at SYO's urban event.
Well done to Peter Hodkinson who has been selected to attend the Elite Development Coaching Camp and EuroMeeting which is being held at Craggan Outdoor, Grantown-on-Spey, PH26 3NT from Sunday 28th July until Monday 5th August 2013. Full selections.
Shirts have arrived! They will be available to buy at the Rushcliffe event. We have a stock of 60+ shirts in a variety of sizes. They are £20 each with junior sizes (probably for under 8's) slightly cheaper. Don't worry if you can't get to Rushcliffe, there will be plenty of opportunity to get your hands on one and we will be ordering some more shortly for those sizes that prove popular.

The 14th annual Bassetlaw Primary Schools Orienteering Festival took place in Kings’ Park, Retford, on Tuesday. This year, the children were challenged to complete a score orienteering course, which involved visiting up to 20 different control sites in 20 minutes. Each control was worth 10 points, with points deducted if they went over the allotted 20 minutes.

Schools arrived at different times throughout the afternoon and after a brief map walk to familiarise themselves with the map they set off at staggered start times.

The standard was high with many runners scoring 180 points or more. In the team event both of the top 2 teams scored an impressive maximum 600 points and were eventually split by the total time it took to collect the 600 points

Thanks to Hilary Palmer for sending in this press cutting of the NOC team that won the Compass Sport Cup in 2003. How many faces do you recognise? The qualifying heat must have been held at Blidworth Woods(16th March 2003) and it looks like you had to use master maps, see the Gallery of images for some great fashion sense.

The final is in LOGland, at Belton, on July 7th and if we have got our information right then there is an added bonus to qualifying this year (we will have to check this)

If NOC win the heat they are through.
Also as long as NOC, DVO and LEI field complete teams then if
LEI win the heat then whoever comes second will also go through.

This is due to the position LEI juniors achieved last year in the final. The rules are here.
The final standings in the NOC winter league are now available. Thanks to Paul Beresford for keeping count of the scores. They are still subject to change as Paul and the organisers have to try and decipher many different styles of handwriting! Please contact Paul with any discrepancies you happen to find. The tables are here
Thankfully the weather was clear (but cold) for last weekend's JK action in the Chilterns.

Reading University held the sprint race on Good Friday. Podium finishes for Anthony Squire (Silver on M35) and Hilary Palmer (Bronze on W65) got the weekend off to a flyer. Top 10 finishes for Harry Nicholson (4th MOpen) and Jane Booker (9th W55).

Saturday saw action at Hambledon, a very runnable area with not a bramble in sight! Sunday moved to Cold Ash, a more intricate area, more suited to map readers. Both areas' times were combined to provide a JK Champion. Anthony Squire once again provided the stand out result, winning gold on M35. Andy Llewellyn (M21L) and Andrew Powell (M21S pictured below) also topped their lists. Hilary Palmer once again appeared on the podium, taking silver on W65L.

Victoria Littlewood (W18L) and Robert Parkinson (M55S) both finished in 2nd place and Ben Squire didn't let his father have all the limelight finishing 3rd on the M10B course.

Other top 10 finishes were, David Booker (5th M55S), Anthony Donaldson (5th M45S), Catherine Hughes (10th W40L), James Lowthian (10th M12A), David Olivant (4th M65S), John Palmer (6th M65S), Helen Parkinson (8th W45S), Richard Robinson (9th M21E), Jack Tiffin (5th M21V) and Jordan Webster (5th M18S).

Monday saw the relays return to Hambledon with Richard Robinson, Anthony Squire and Peter Hodkinson 5th in the JK trophy race. Nick Malbon, Jack Lord and Ben Beresford came in 9th on the Men's Short class. All in all, a super JK, next year it's South Wales.

A NOC tent and feather banner are also making the journey so please look out for it, it will be there for days 2+3 and the relays. There are a few new members making the trip so it would be great to meet up at the tent. http://www.thejk.org.uk/jk2013/

The Spring edition of British Orienteering's Focus magazine sees NOC third in the list of clubs based on the total number of events and activities that each club have organised. In total NOC had 138 events and activities in 2012. Full figures for all the clubs in the UK can be found on page 30 of the magazine which is sent out to all members of British Orienteering.
Closing dates are fast approaching for the JK, the JK orienteering festival is the biggest event in the UK and this year is being held in Berkshire (The Chilterns); the relays are on the final day (1st April).

Relay events involve teams of 3, running in succession and 'handing over' in the assembly area. They are sociable events with a good team atmosphere and NOC enter several teams at both these events each year with a mixture of competitive and not so competitive teams, so please don't feel you have to be of a certain standard to participate.

Please see the attached flyer for details of the classes (courses) for the JK, as well as the usual details I require you to email me if you wish to run and the deadline by which I require this information! Note there is a new class for the JK relays this year - M/W210+ (see PDF attachment). The deadline is a couple of days before the final event closing date so that I can do a selection and enter the teams! JK deadline 4th March.

As always, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.
