The next edition of the club newsletter is due to be published in mid January, as always contributions are most welcome, please send articles to Peter Hubberstey. Let’s make Peter a very happy editor. The 7th January is the deadline for submissions, so just over a week to go.
NOC member Fiona is top news in the Matlock Mercury (see the forum). If you see any other interesting articles on the world wide web involving NOC members then please let us know or just leave a message on the forum. The article gives great coverage to DVO, well done to them, don’t forget NOC are still looking for a volunteer for the role of publicity officer, one of their tasks could be to write similar articles for the Nottinghamshire local press. If you fancy the role, then please get in touch.
Time to run off the Christmas excess at the last league event of the year, hosted by LEI this Sunday at Beacon Hill. Plenty of NOC members are in the running for top three places. Good luck to all.

Table
Merry Christmas to all members of NOC and orienteers everywhere.
More success at Walesby last Sunday. Congratulations to NOC member Hugh Atkin for winning the Central Notts Scout District competition. Hugh won the 12 and under class.
Congratulations to Peter Hodkinson (M18) on winning the Midland night champion title at Rowney Warren recently.

Other big runs included Nigel Mockridge (M45L) 2nd and James Clarke (M50S) 3rd.

Fancy giving night orienteering a try? NOC are staging an event at Shirebrook Wood on Saturday the 17th Jan 2009.
Sunday’s Walesby fixture was the first that Neil Fraser had organised. Neil passed on this message “Not sure if this covers everyone - but thanks to you all for making my first attempt at organising less stressful than it might have been (please pass my thanks on to other's in your teams who helped out). With special thanks to Mick and Peter for sorting out the courses without whom none of this would have been possible! Everyone seems to have had a good time - at least I didn't hear anyone moaning”

Everyone at NOC would also like to thank and congratulate you Neil for organising such a splendid day.
Don’t forget that in the Barn there will be soup and mince pies available. NOC tops and sweatshirts will be on sale. Car stickers will also be making an appearance, please pick one up if you don’t have one.
We had some new members join in December. Welcome to NOC and we hope you have a long association with the club.

The new members are

Tom Banks
Kam Khalil
Rowan Lee

Sanjay Puri
The Smith family, Amanda, Jack and Paul
Danny Teesdale

Hilary Palmer is planning a coaching session on Saturday 3rd January 2009 from 1030 – 1230 at Bestwood Country Park. All NOC members, both adults and juniors are welcome. Park in the South Car Park and and pick up a map to find the start from Hilary’s Corsa windscreen – make your way as a warm up to the start point marked on map. Allow enough time to get to the start by 1030.

The coaching is aimed at White, Yellow and Orange Standard.

Older juniors who have the young leaders award are welcome to come and help – or just come and have a run.

If you intend to be present please e-mail me at coaching@noc-uk.org and let me know so we have some idea of the likely numbers by Wednesday 31st December at the latest.

(NOC Committee Coaching rep.)
Although it seems a long way off, we need to get thinking about entries for the British and JK relays.

The British is early next year - March 1st and the closing date is in January.

I've attached the forms you need to fill out and return, along with a cheque payable to NOC. To make my life easier it is strictly money with entry please!!

Hope you have a Happy Christmas and a fit New Year

Simon

PS the other date for your diary is Sunday March 29th which is the qualifying round of the Compass Sport Cup

The Start Time allocations are published here. The allocation of ecards to individual runners has been made, and will be available from enquiries at the event.

(This note only applies to the Scout/Guide competition which is taking place at the same time as the normal orienteering event)
The next edition of the “Black and Green Word Machine” is due to be published in mid January, please send any contributions to Peter Hubberstey. Your contributions will be most welcome, let’s make Peter a very happy editor. The 7th January is the deadline for submissions, so that’s plenty of time before and after Christmas to get writing.
An energetic and successful first meeting of the new look committee took place at the end of November. The minutes are now online under the administration option.
Unfortunately the DVO event at Whitesprings on 14th December will no longer feature in the East Midlands League as it has proved not possible to provide a light green course (technical reasons)

There are plenty of NOC members in contention for top three finishes in the league. Good luck to all of them at the last fixture of the year, the Beacon Hill event. The latest league tables can be found at www.emoa.org.uk
Volunteers are needed for the starts at the JK 2009. Help for the Saturday and Sunday is required (11th & 12th April 2009). Helpers will receive a discount on their entry fees. Further details are on the forum.
Broxtowe Sports Partnership Celebration Evening

The Broxtowe Sport Celebration event is held each year to recognise people who have contributed to local sport through performances, volunteering or sheer enthusiasm and endeavour. This years’ event will take place on Tuesday 16th December.

NOC members Peter Hodkinson and James Taylor have both been nominated for “Sports person of the year”, good luck on the night from everyone at NOC.
We had some new members join in November. Welcome to NOC and we hope you have a long association with the club.

Chancellor Alistair Darling may have cut VAT from 17.5% to 15% but he can’t beat NOC’s reduction of 30% on club tops.

The new club kit has been reduced to ÂŁ20 for one month only. There is never a better time to get that club top, whether for yourself or for a Christmas present.

And that’s not all; we have a large selection of “retro” clothing including the ever-popular sweatshirts. See the club forum for details and pictures.

All the clothing will be available at the Walesby event (21st December) but if you need to arrange delivery/collection before that date, then please give Mark Webster a ring on 01159169711.

Happy shopping.

Thanks to everyone who made it to last month’s annual general meeting. The latest A.G.M minutes are now available to view via the website.

A link to the 2007 minutes has also been added for completeness.
There is something I cannot fathom for the moment about the various Bestwood files that I need to load to create RouteGadget. I hope to have it working later.

23:25 Working OK now. (For the technically minded, it was actually a Java runtime error when used with the new Google Chrome browser, which prevented Java running on other browsers so I needed a complete reboot). Ray.

Agenda
Congratulations to the following NOC Juniors in the selections announced by British Orienteering yesterday:
Peter Hodkinson, who has been selected for the Junior Squad 2008/9, and also in the M18 age group to represent GB in the European Youth Orienteering Championships, and James Taylor M17 and Jenny Evans W15 who have been chosen for the 2008/9 Start Squad.
Do you have any NOC equipment which has not been returned to the garage after use? We seem to be short of quite a few vital items, so if you could please have a search round your house, garage, shed, the back of your car, etc., and then arrange to return anything that you find, then this will help us all to put on the next event (CATI)- and subsequent events. If you have items which need to be retained (for example for training), but which are used for NOC events, can you please ensure that an explanatory note is clearly displayed in the garage, or everyone is made aware of where to find those items next time they are needed. Thanks Dave
Today saw the third of the NOC weddings this summer. I'm sure that all members of NOC would like to join me in passing on our congratulations and best wishes, and wish Andrew and Emily a happy and prosperous future together.
You may remember, back in January, NOC qualifying for the Compass Sport Cup final which will be held in Sutton Park, Birmingham on Sunday October 19th.

Being so close means we have really no excuse for not getting a strong team out, remember we need competitors in all age groups, men and women.

The closing date is early October but I am away September 20th to October 4th so could do with getting organised straight away!

If you are available to run, could you e-mail me name, age group, BOF number and SI card number ASAP?

I'll sort out entry fees etc later, at the moment it is more important to know who is running!

Please for my sake, do this now rather than next month.

Also if you know you definitely cannot run, it would be helpful to know this - I'm not interested in the excuse thanks!

Hope very much to hear from you shortly,

Simon Elliott, Team Captain
On behalf of all members of NOC can I pass on our congratulations and best wishes to both of you on the occasion of your marriage and wish you both a happy and prosperous future together.
On behalf of all members of NOC can I pass on our congratulations and best wishes to both of you on your wedding day and wish you both a happy and prosperous future together.
The Juniors Document page now contains a Juniors Calendar running up to October 2009. It will be updated about twice a year.
Congratulations to the following NOC Juniors who have been selected to represent England in the Junior Home Internationals against Scotland, Wales and Ireland in September:
W16 - Fiona Claxton and Jenny Evans
  M18 - Peter Hodkinson
A host of NOC Juniors were in the East Midlands team that finished 4th at the Juniors Inter Regional Championships; one of their best ever finishes.  The two day competition hosted by the North East Orienteering Association was held near Richmond and comprised an individual and relay competition.  The best NOC performances of the weekend came from Fiona Claxton who finished 2nd on W16 and Peter Hodkinson who finished 2nd on M18.  A special award was also given to Matthew Wallace for competing in all six Junior Inter Regionals that he has been ellegable to compete in, with this being his final year.

  Richard Robinson
EMJOS Lead Coach
Mick Lucking, Andrew Powell, James Taylor, Peter Hodkinson and Richard Robinson will be flying out to Finland today to compete in the Jukola relay, which this year is being held near Tampere.  They will be joined out there by team mates Ali Brunton and Helen Palmer (aka Helena Peters) travelling with their Wing O team mates from Trondheim in Norway.  The seven leg relay starts at 11pm on Saturday 14th with the winning team expected to take approximately 7½ hours.  Our NOC team hope to better their debut performance of 359 out of the 1,361 teams participating; however this year's field is even bigger, which is understood to be the largest ever has 1,454 teams entered including seven teams from Great Britain.

Helen Palmer will also be running for WingO in the Womens Venla relay on Saturday afternoon against 970 other womens teams.  The total number of runners at this year's competition is expected to be 14,062!

You can follow all the action online at www.jukola2008.net
There are late permission changes to the Summer League event at Manton on June 22nd. It is likely the event will be cancelled.

BOF Coaching have organised an Individual Coaching Day at Cordon/Stapeley on Saturday June 7th, the day before the nearby National Event at Brown Clee. There will be instruction available for three levels Orange/LtGreen/Green+. The application form is here. NB Closing date is 21st May.
Four years after achieving Clubmark standard, NOC has been reaccredited with Clubmark.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed towards achieving this quality status marker which indicates that NOC cares for the club's Junior members well-being, enthuses them, helps them to use their leisure time creatively, develops their talents, and identifies and supports the outstanding ones amongst them.
Follow the link from the Clubmark logo (bottom left foot of Home Page) to find out more.

To all members of NOC:

If you move house or change email address please could you try to inform the club secretary so our records can remain up to date.

It is very useful to us and you to be able to keep in contact with our membership about upcoming events.

To anyone who is on email who hasn’t given their email address to the club, please consider doing so as we currently have only 50% of club members addresses, and it is by far the easiest way of mass communicating with the club as a whole.

Thanks in advance,

NOC committee.
Maybe it was all the mud, or the heavy snow showers, but NOC, as a club, failed to get any placings whatsoever at this year's JK Relays.

However, congratulations to our own Helen Palmer, now resident in Trondheim, Norway, who brought across a few of her teammates from the local club WING OK, winning the Women's Trophy by a clear minute. Helen ran second leg, taking her team from 4th place into the lead.
Sorry: The link seems to be personalised - so maybe only the contactee who entered JK2008 via Fabian4 will be sent a copy. Other members of their party and those via snail mail are excluded.

There is no award for 'Best Newcomer' for 2007.
This year it is being organised by Ashbourne Rugby Club with assistance from DVO (presumably in the Peak District)

The proposed dates are Saturday or Sunday 14th / 15th June

For those of you who haven't done it before it's good fun but does require a commitment to reconnoitre your leg before the event!

Legs vary in distance and the team has to consist of all age groups

Unfortunately it clashes with the Jukola relay in Finland to which NOC are sending a team however if there is enough interest I will organise an entry.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in running and which date as the Rugby Club are trying to gauge interest to see if it is worth putting the event on.

thanks
Simon

Peter's funeral will be take place at 11.40 on Wednesday 5th March in the West Chapel at Wilford Hill Cemetery & Crematorium, Loughborough Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham (Tel: 0115 915 2340). This is very close to where we lived for 35 years, so the area holds many memories for us. Afterwards we'd like to invite everyone back to The Country Cottage Hotel, Easthorpe Street, Ruddington for a light buffet.

Peter was never one for formal occasions, so there's no need for people to be getting their dark suits and ties out of the wardrobe. We'd also like to restrict flowers to family only, as we think Peter would prefer people to make a gift to Buxton Mountain Rescue Team instead (details will be in the Order of Service).

Please can you indicate to Dave Cooke if you will be attending, and if you would wish to have any particular recollections mentioned at the service.

Peter was to have controlled the Crich Chase event this Sunday, 2nd March. If you are unable to attend the funeral, there will be an opportunity to show your respects at the event. Ros, Chris and myself will be at Crich, and we hope to see many of you there.

Simon Bourne
I am sorry to report that Peter Bourne (DVO and ex NOC) died today. These are the only details I have at the moment and I shall post more information when it is known. I am sure that you will all want to join with me in offering condolences to Ros and family. Dave Cooke
The England team for Interland on 2 March 2008 at Budel in Holland includes just one member of NOC this year

M18 Peter Hodkinson

England competes in this annual five-way match, its only match outside the British Isles, against two Belgian teams (Flemish and French speaking), the Dutch and the Nordrhein-Westfalische (NW Germany) team.
Well done and many thanks to those who trekked to Thetford to help the Club qualify for this year's final. I got the impression from those who ran that the area was nicer than anticipated - it certainly allowed some very fast times! We had a number of class winners but special mention should be made of Bert Bradshaw who contributed a counting score in the male 75+ age group - have a nice rest in Australia or is it warm weather training?

The final is at Sutton Park, Birmingham on Sunday October 19th. For those of you that haven't been there before, it is extremely fast so will favour the fit, so spikes on and get training.
Simon
The rush to sort the Compass Sport Cup entries out and Christmas in general meant a baptism of fire for me in my new role. In case you haven't cottoned on, I 'volunteered' for the next stint of Team Manager. The only slight difference to tradition is that I knew at the time of taking the post that there would be events I would not be able to attend e.g. this years JK. So Andrew Powell has kindly agreed to deputise on the day and may well look after some of the team selection issues! I will be dealing with the administration so all entry queries to me - though you may wish to copy Andrew into correspondence if you think appropriate.

JK and British Relays: The next deadline is rapidly approaching! In order to take advantage of cheaper entry fees, the relay entries for the JK have to be in mid-February and the British by mid-March.

Here are the entry forms for the JK Relays and for the British Relays. I will need entries for the JK by February 15th and the British by March 14th at the very latest. Entries for the individual competitions you do yourselves!

Any problems don't hesitate to contact me:
