NOC Juniors retained the Yvette Baker Trophy in the final held on Cannock Chase.
The teams scores were NOC 781, WCH 768, LOC 766.
So NOC can still proudly claim to have the best Junior Squad in the UK, holding this trophy for the third successive year, (as well as the Harvester for three years out of the last four, and the Peter Palmer for the last three years.)

*ed courses do not really have Gold times. These are time calculated from the 'A' Gold time to account for the lower technical difficulty and length, and the increased age of the runner
Unfortunately the Burbage provisional results on the SYO website are obviously not yet complete. M35 and W45 have chunks missing.
I cannot yet calculate the club champs results. Ray
NOC will be hosting its first ePunching event on Jan 7th 2001 at Walesby.

Over 80 club members already have bought their SportIdent dobbers, but to the less well travelled orienteer this will be a novel experience. Therefore being an introductory session for many of you, it has been decided to waive the dobber hire charge at this event.

There will be a demonstration of how the system works at Walesby.

It is expected that almost all C4 and larger events in the East Midlands will be using epunching from the new year. Perhaps you might want to consider giving dobbers as Christmas presents?

With the AGM tomorrow night .......
Dear All

Well its parole time again........ I have now finished my 7th year as NOC Mapping Coordinator and I'm free at last.................. At least that's how it should be! because just as at the end of the first stretch I am unable to find a successor. After much debate I have come to the conclusion that the post of mapping co-ordinator does not really need to be done by a mapper, merely someone who is willing to look after the map stocks, control cards, etc and further more be willing to take them to NOC events or get them to the event officials as well as to occasionally drink coffee and eat chocolate biscuits at the NOC committee meetings.

To this end we require someone with some free time and enough room to be able to store the map stocks which take up approx a decent sized wardrobe or loft-space or spare room or.... well you get the picture.

Both David, Pauline and myself will continue to survey-revise-redraw as and when required and co-ordinate volunteers so will someone step forward or else you will all have to suffer interminable editorials once I take over as editor of the club magazine.......:-)

I personally have 4 mapping projects on the go for the forthcoming winter so as you can see I will have my weekends (well Saturdays anyway!) well taken care of.

Actually this is the first time since NOC was formed that we have commissioned three professional maps in any one year namely "Byron's Walk, Harlow Wood, and Haywood Blidworth and Sansom Woods" the first by Peel Survey you will have had the pleasure of early in the year the second by Robert's Mapping which is a brand new area adjacent to Thieves Wood in a couple of weeks and finally the third by The Mapworks at our badge event February 2001.

These maps were a bargain at approx £3,000 so do come along and see what the club is spending your money on and if you feel that you would be willing to look after all those lovely maps then let myself or any member of the committee know so that I can reclaim my loft ASAP

Thanks

Keith Streb
The much travelled results of the Summer League event have been discovered, and are now available.
Our neighbours, the Lincoln Orienteering Group, LOG, have asked us to publicise the following event changes:

Our C4 event scheduled for Nov 26th 2000 at Bourne Woods has been changed. Forest Enterprise have stopped us from using Bourne Woods next month because they are thinning 75% of the area and are not permitting any events to take place there for several months (not just 'O'). We've elected to keep our dates in the Fixtures calendar but swap the Bourne Woods and Twyford Wood events over.

This means that Nov 26th 2000 will still be a C4 but at Twyford Wood (just off the A1 at Colsterworth roundabout) and our event planned for April 29th 2001 will now be Bourne Woods C4. We'll try to get fliers out at most local events over the next month but any circulation/publicity you can give this would be greatly appreciated.

Note: there is no string course at Twyford Wood next month.

Thank you.
Andy Stevenson, LOG

The Agenda for the AGM on 31st October is published here. As announced there will be no copies sent by post unless specifically requested from the secretary.
An excellent turnout by DVO nearly upset us at Longshaw. With LEI not actively sending a team, NOC's victory was due to the number of wins in the head-to-head battles on each course.
NOC 795 (100-100-100-100- 99- 99- 99- 98) DVO 781 (100- 99- 99- 98- 97- 97- 96- 95) LOG 193 ( 97- 96) LEI 193 (100- 93)
It is important that we get everybody to the Final (especially MW14-).

There has been a late change due to loss of access permission, so the date and venue of the National Final is still uncertain. But it is most likely on either 9th or 10th Dec, and will be in the Midlands. If the distance makes it sensible, we will hire a coach.
The committee has decided to postpone the Night event at Sansom Woods until March.

The rescheduling of the Caddihoe Chase has made it unlikely that more than a handful of competitors would attend.
The NOC Juniors have retained the Peter Palmer Junior Team Relay Trophy at Frith Hill, Dorking.

The first team of Nicholas James / Thomas Billam / Stephen Wright / Alison O'Neil / Sian Roberts / Colin Olivant / Stephen Robinson / David Hodkinson won by 17 minutes to complete a hat-trick of wins.

Second placed team were LOC, and third were EBOR a further 2 mins behind.

NOC also entered a team into the handicap competition, and they finished fifth. The make-up of the two teams is however influenced by the need to have at least two boys and two girls in each team. Most of the members of the first team have run in the handicap race in previous years, and thereby gain valuable experience. So we can expect to see Tim Baggully, Sarah O'Neil, Andrew Bull, Rose Hodkinson, Dominic Longley, Thomas Brydges, Rhys Roberts and James Seddon running in the first team in the years to come.

NOC Juniors now hold all of the team trophies open to them:
Harvester (3 wins in last four years)
Yvette Baker (2 wins in last two years)
Peter Palmer (3 wins in last three years)

Well done to all the NOC juniors, with special thanks to the coaches who put in so much of their own time.
As an experiment, I've added some movies taken at the White Rose.
Unfortunately I didn't capture the moment RP fell in the ditch!
Ray The originals are each 6Mb long and look a lot clearer, I've compressed them with Quick Time 4.1 to Streaming 100kbps format, and they now look rather blurred. If anybody knows how to do this better please let me know.
Long standing member Alan Gould is moving with his company to the Netherlands.

He has a choice of two 'O' clubs to join, KOVZ and Olifant. Any guesses which one he'll go for?
Has anybody seen the club noticeboard? It was last known to have been used at the Little John Relays, but seems to have disappeared. Please let Angela Lucking of its whereabouts.
My thanks to all those club members who were at the White Rose relays for their concern and assistance when I injured myself. Fortunately my finger was only dislocated not broken so the doctor was able to pull it back in place. It is now as straight as ever it was but twice the diameter! Mike O'Neil said it was an unusual dislocation and he was right, all the staff on A&E had a look at the X-Rays!

Thanks to Mike for the consultation and to all those who took care of Tom and Laura, it was one less thing to worry about knowing they being well looked after.

Paul Billam
What a weekend!

Bad points: Appalling weather, a recalcitrant O'Neil van, and minor injuries to several folk during the Badge events, and one visit to hospital after the Relays, but the news is no break just a dislocation. We wish the Billam family 'Get well soon'.

Good points: We had a decent crop of prizes for the badge events:
Hilary Palmer 1st W50L
Richard Robinson 1st M20L
Paul Morris 1st M40S
Pauline Olivant 1st W45S
Sian Roberts 2nd W14A
Nicola Olivant 2nd W20L
Steve Wright 2nd M55L
Rhys Roberts 3rd M12A
Stuart Hatfield 3rd M20L
and a special mention for Laura Billam who came first on the Day 2 W10B in only her second Badge event.

The Robby Knudd relay was won by Robert Palmer / Nicholas James / Sian Roberts about 2 minutes clear of the opposition.

First in the forest was also Robert Palmer, Robert racing Richard

but his half-second lead over Richard Robinson was short lived because his break-neck run could not cope with the narrow bridge leading into the forest, so Robert also wins the "First in The Ditch" prize.

The Saturday Barbeque was conducted under umbrellas and dripping trees.

The Sunday Cricket match was won by the Juniors, mostly due the size of their team which batted first leaving the adults no light whatsover!
EMOA have just been notified that they have been successful in their application for Lottery funding under the 'Awards for All' scheme. With additional funding from the region's clubs, EMOA will now be able to purchase SportIdent equipment. The target is implementation for Badge events next spring.
is moved to Michael Napier's for 10/17/24 Aug, before resuming at the Olivants' from Aug 31st.
The club committee decided that a summary of its minutes should be published on the web site. The first of these are now accessible from the main index.
Please feel free to comment on the minutes by eMail to anyone on the committee.
For the third time in four years NOC has won the Juniors Trophy at the Harvester Relays.
In thick mist and rain on extensively mined moorland, Stephen Wright / Chris Hodkinson / Nicholas James / David Hodkinson / Richard Robinson came home first in 4:16:48. Second placed SLOW finished in 5:20:36.

Our women's team finished 11th in 7:01:44 but did beat DVO by 18 mins!

The men's team was disqualified because one lap was incomplete following a lighting failure.
The confirmed results show that we were fourth.
SYO 180, MDOC 162, SLOW 131, NOC 124, BOK 112
As nobody has come forward to organise the Summer League event on 13th July at Colwick Woods, the event has been cancelled.
  • Keith Streb will have space in his car for anyone wanting a lift to the JK this year. Travelling Friday morning returning after the relays on Monday. Or does any one else want to car share?
  • Steve Hodkinson is looking for a lift back to Manchester on Monday.

For the time being, the information will be limited to fixture news and current results.
The three representatives from NOC were very successful in the 'Interland' international held in Belgium last weekend. Running for England, Hilary Palmer and Sarah O'Neil (on her debut) both won their courses, and David Hodkinson was second.

This annual event is a competition between England, the Netherlands, Westphalia, Flemish Belgium and French Belgium.
(amended 17:10 21st Jan)

Unfortunately we have had a low entry for our Double Quick Short Races Weekend and NOC have reluctantly taken the decision to cancel the Short Races on Saturday 29th January 2000.

The Short Races on Sunday 30th January will go ahead in a modified form to ensure the Chasing Start is viable. There is now only one course with Prologue 3.9km+70m, Chase 2.7km+30m. Starts in the prologue will be at 30 second intervals, so there will be a degree of head to head racing there too. Results will still be listed by the original six classes.

The colour coded event has been extended to White to Blue.

There is now EOD available for the short races on Sunday, entry fee £6/3.

Entrants for Sunday only: we will send Final Details and cards as normal.

Entrants for Saturday only: we are returning cheques, results envelopes and 2 stamps and enclosing Final details. If you wish to compete on Sunday instead of Saturday, please come to EOD registration after 09:00, bringing your unused results envelope. The fee will be £5.50/2.50.

Both day entrants: we are returning cheques, results envelopes and 2 stamps and enclosing Final Details with a note of your prologue start time. If you still wish to compete, please come and collect your card from Enquiries after 09:00, bringing your unused results envelope. The fee will be £5.50/2.50.

Please see revised Link no longer available details.
