Nottingham University OC are looking for transport to events each weekend, usually in the East Midlands, but sometimes further away. Anyone who would be willing to provide transport for any number of students, however few, to any orienteering events would be most appreciated.

The Elvaston night Event is on (contrary to an e groups mail of a few weeks ago). Karen is planning etc. The starts are from 6 until 6:45pm on Sat 3rd Nov from the main car park. There will be a long, medium and a short course. There are some fliers around but due to the lack of events they may well be having problems circulating effectively. Could those that have the technology post this event on the relevant web sites.
Thanks, Andy Jackson

For clarity, it must be pointed out that all events comprising the British Schools Championships weekend are CLOSED.
The Sherwood Pines event must be entered via Schools and only those entering this event (and their teachers) may come to Thieves Wood.
The Harlow Woods event must be entered via the Special Qualification Race form through your school.

Of course members of all EMOA clubs are invited to help at all these events, and there will be opportunities for some helpers to have runs on Saturday.
NOC retained the Peter Palmer Trophy for the fourth successive year.

NOC led for the whole race, Thomas Billam gaining a 2 minute lead at the first leg spectator control when the others with him in the leading bunch failed to notice the direction of the final loop. Nick James found the going tough on his route choice and was briefly overtaken, but still returned in the lead. David Hodkinson in a steady run extended the lead, and was followed by steady runs by Sarah O'Neil and Stephen Robinson who was able to run without headlight.

By now there were only two teams on the same lap, NOC and a non-competitive team made up of runners from many clubs, but the lead was about seven minutes. Alison O'Neil and Dominic Langley extended this to 10 minutes giving Colin Olivant a chance of staying in front of the older Mark Nixon on the final leg. Colin's lead was only four minutes at the spectator control, and Mark Nixon caught him with about a kilometer to go, but a supreme effort in the last 200 hundred metres saw NOC home by just 2 metres on the line.

The second competitive team were about half an hour behind NOC.

Here's hoping Alan Gould had no breakages when he moved to his permanent address in The Netherlands this Monday.
He will let us know his telephone number when it's installed.
Now he can get all his possessions out of storage - including his O-kit !

As well as being Bastille day the 14th July is the HSBC Notts Youth Games, and for the first time orienteering is one of the participating sports. This is the county final for the District teams (years 5 and below) who will run a 'White' course in pairs at Bramcote Hills Park. There will be 98 pairs competing, representing 7 of the 8 Notts Districts - many of them in 'viable' school teams which we hope will also compete in November at BSOC.

Many of you have already 'volunteered' to help, but Pauline and I would like a few more, especially to 'watch' over the electronic boxes out in the woods. Starts are from 12.15 for 98 minutes, so if any of you are free and could help we'd be very grateful.

Many thanks - Hilary Palmer Link no longer available
Some NOC 'O' tops, a pair of gaiters, and a coaching manual were left in Mick and Anglela's porch. Does anybody know who and why? Are they donations to the club? Please call if you can explain.
This years Peak District Long Distance Footpath Relay will be taking place on Saturday 15th September starting and finishing at the Grouse Inn. The overall distance will be 60 miles and there'll be 20 legs (minimum of 12 runners per team). It is most probable that NOC will pay the entry fee (TBC by the committee). If you'd like to take part please email Link no longer available
Could you please publicise our summer league on the NOC website as I suspect many NOC members are like coiled springs waiting for events at the moment.
Remaining events are:
Bourne 5th July
Lincoln South Common 19th July
Stapleford again 2nd August

Also our summer relays on Keith's new Hartsholme Park map on 12th August.

The summer league is only 50p each, with 'short' and 'long' courses each night. The relay is also cheap, only £3 per team. Link no longer available
There are now seven events on the calendar and three TBA dates plus three Derbyshire activities.

Now the club now URGENTLY needs an organiser/planner for each of the events.
Courses at each event will be White/Yellow/LightGreen and a 'Summer League' course.

There will be out-going phone calls shortly - but why not take your pick and volunteer first?
With it being Easter Sunday, and a number of the Sunday regulars having departed abroad, I won't pick a venue unless more than two separate eMails arrive requesting one! Ray
The popular Circuit Training at Sport Nottingham, Meadow Lane, will take a one week break on Easter Monday. Some of us will be relieved to hear
10am prompt, Bulwell Hall Park. Assemble at car park immediately after entrance gateway off Norwich Gardens SK537462. The park is 1.5k by 1k with 20m variation in height. There is an embedded golf course. There are patches of woodland and two lakes. Looks a bit like Allestree! Let's make the most of these blank Sundays by having an explore, (or just a run round the periphery would be 5k), and see if it could be used for a low key event.
I was selected to run for England in the Interland match against Germany, Holland, Belgium (Walloons) and Belgium (Flemish), along with Rose Hodkinson, David Hodkinson, Liz Day and Richard Robinson from NOC. Unfortunately, Liz had to pull out through illness. This year the match was situated around Cologne in Germany.

Ten hours of travelling brought us to an area reminiscent of Nottinghamshire; muddy, brambly and flat. However, we were all glad to get our O-shoes back on (scrubbed spotless the previous night by devoted mothers so as to pass the foot and mouth inspection at Dover), and with a practice race on the Saturday there was no excuse for mistakes!

The race went well, with England winning comfortably. Both of us girls had good runs, Rose winning her course outright while I won the Interland competition but remained five minutes down on the race winner. We had a great time, and look forward to the next opportunity to get out into the forest!
Alison O'Neil

(Alison modestly omits to mention she was running up a class)
10am prompt, Attenborough Nature Reserve. Assemble at 6 Long Lane, Attenborough. SK517346. A flat 30 min run, a flat 45 min run, and a flat 50 min run, or whatever Mick and Angela think up!
Some of the woods in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire have been reopened to the public by the Forestry Commission.

We have checked with FC precisely what 'reopened' means. You are allowed to go for a walk, run or a cycle, but should stay away from the forest edge where that adjoins livestock farmland. Some parts of woods are taped off (eg near the pigs at Harlow Wood). You can ride a horse, but only if you ride it there from nearby - you may not bring it 'boxed'.

Explicitly, we are not allowed to hold any events, even a club training run, no matter how informal. But mappers, planners and controllers can walk around inside the woods away from the edges.

Juniors are reminded that Sherwood Pines is the venue for the British Schools O Champs this November, and to remain competitive they must not go into that forest.
Regrettably, Byron's Walk, has now also been cancelled.
10am prompt, Nottingham Waterways. Park on Musters Road, assemble at 4 Bridge Grove, West Bridgford. SK583378. A flat 30 min run, a flat 45 min run, and a one-big-hill 50 min run, each with an in-terrain section.
10am prompt, Nottingham University, opposite Arts Centre, SK546381, East Drive, turn north at traffic lights at east end of dual carriageway University Boulevard A6005. A run and a map checking exercise.

This will be ideal for beginners. There is not the pressure of being an actual event, and there will be people there who will be only too pleased to show you the ropes. Oh, and it won't cost a penny!
There will some activity this Sunday, 11th March at Bramcote Hills. Come at 10am prompt. SK499384 A6007/A6002 car park. Please don't expect an event, but there will be maps.
Compass Sport Cup rescheduled for March 10th 2002. No competition for 2001. Still at Thetford, not Brown Clee !! Catherine will destroy cheques in her possession for any events entered via Team Manager.
NOC have cancelled their events at Sansom and Bestwood on 24th and 25th March. The Compass Sport Cup match at Thetford on 18th March has also been lost.

The next NOC event at Byron's Walk, April 22nd, is still seven weeks away, and a decision will be taken in early April.

As you may have noted elsewhere, major events are already being lost, notably the JK. The BOF website gives the latest details.
Liz Day, one of our new recruits, is looking for a lift back from BOC01 to Nottingham immediately after the relays. She has a compulsory practical exam at Nottingham University on Tuesday at 11am.

If there were two places in a car it would be ideal as Andrew Powell, another student (from NUOC), is also in need of a return journey.
Training by running alone builds up stamina and speed, but these are not the only requirements for successful Orienteering. Strength and flexibility can be improved by other training, and one of the best ways is by regular Circuit Training.

Sport Nottingham will be putting on weekly sessions with Orienteers in mind, at their Leisure Centre at Notts County's Meadow Lane stadium on Monday evenings from 18:00 to 19:00. The fee is £2.50 / £1.50 for the one hour session, and if you bring along your map from Sunday, there will an opportunity to share your foibles afterwards.
Children welcome. No need to book - just come along!
One of NOC's best juniors, Brendan Mackrill, was in the team of three representing Great Britain last week at Trentino.

He finished 42nd of 72 in the short distance race, and 45th of 72 in the classic race. The GBR team was 11th of 22 in the relay.
Derek Mill is interested in sharing a hired car in NI.

An outstanding achievement for the club - well done everybody!
Jennifer Beverley has created a web site just for the juniors.
I am seeking passengers to the British Champs in NI during May this year. The current SuperApex price for a car and one passenger is £130 rising to £156 for two persons etc etc, so you must be able to share costs . As yet I have no accommodation sorted.

Of course if someone else is going by car and requires a passenger then obviously I am willing to go as an additional driver whatever.

Please E-mail me on Link no longer available

I've added Catherine Hughes to the results. I apologise for the omission.
I note that there are a few seconds difference in the official Gold times which eventually arrived. I don't think these are enough to have any real effect, so I've left everything else as it was.
To complete NOC's quota of two events for the EMOA night league, the postponed event from 21st Oct will be held at Sansom Woods on Saturday 24th March. Parking at Longdale Lane car park. More details (to follow) on fixtures.
